Travel to Russia/Ukraine by USSR-born American

I was wondering whether anyone has experience in traveling to Ukraine or Russia after they were born in the USSR and escaped during communist times. Does security in airports hassle Soviet-born Americans coming back to the former USSR. My mother is a US citizen who was born in Kiev. She wants to visit her aunt near the Belarus border. She would have to travel through the Moscow airport. We will visit Kiev in 2013 also. Any input would be appreciated.
