Ancestors from Wełdzirz (today: Shevchenkove)
Good morning!
i live in Germany and doing some research on my family history. One of my grandmothers was born in Wełdzirz, which belongs to ukraine today. Wełdzirz is in galicia near of Dolina. Although the name of the town has changed, i was able to locate it on those old maps: http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/digkonyv/topo/200e/42-49.jpg http://www.semanchuk.com/gen/maps/Un...eutscheMap.png With the help of those, i came to the conclusion, that Wełdzirz is today known as Shevchenkove, Oblast Iwano-Frankiwsk. Am i right? My grandmother was born catholic on 01.08.1925 as the child of Wassil Pochranyczna, (worked as a trainman) and Rosa Katharina Lochmann in Wełdzirz. In ~1941, she went alone with the train to germany to work on a farm near my todays hometown. Sadly, that's all the information i have about her and her family. I was a bit surprised, that googling "Pochranyczna" doesn't returns a single hit. Maybe there is some failure in the transciption of the name? (my grandmother wasn't able to read or write when she came to germany) The name of her mother sounds german, and on the second map above, there is mentioned that in weldzirz lived some german imigrants. Is there someone who is able to confirm this? I'm searching for every bit of information i can get, about the families Pochranyczna and Lochmann or general about the town of Wełdzirz.
i hope someone can give me a new idea where my research could move on. thanks a lot for the efforts! regards from germany Simon |

Hi Simon,
I'm local in Ivano-Frankivsk, and visited the village you're interested in once I think. Shevchenkove is a village in a nice location in Carpathian mountains. It may become a popular tourist destination soon. The nature in the area is very nice. There is a light railway called "Carpathian Tram" / Karpatskyi tramvay in the neighbouring village Vyhoda. Every year more and more tourists come for a visit. You can find more info about it with Google. The information you're looking for might be available at Ivano-Frankivsk oblast archive in Ivano-Frankivsk. Also you can contact the Village Council in Shevchenkove and the Village Head there. I'll try to find their contact details when I have time. You might need to translate your letter into Ukrainian for village officials. Also you can visit Ukraine and go and see people, the village and the archive for yourself. Should you have further questions, feel free to contact me. Best regards, Yurko_uk |

Female: Пограничнa - Pohranychna Male: Пограничний - Poharychnij ? Your translation is very interestring, thanks for that ![]() Also thanks for the cyrillic name of the town. With this i was able to find some new things(eg. a small overview about the history on the ukraine wikipedia page) Or the church of the Shevchenkove today: St.Pantaleon church, Shevchenkove : religion - Encyclopedia of Sights I've ordered me the first film (Roman Catholic Church. Wełdzirz (Dolina)) to a near family research center of LDS. Especially that part looks very interesting: "Birth index 1880-1944 - FHL INTL Film [ 2039912 Item 3 ]" But the language part: "Language: Latin, Polish" scares me a bit. Even so the letters aren't cyrillic (which makes a bit easier). Anyhow, i will try! Again thanks for your replies, but maybe someone has got another piece in the puzzle, some further information about Shevchenkove/Weldzirz or even the family names there. regards Simon |

Koala,

Hello Sylvie,
thanks a lot(!) for your efforts ![]() I am highly interested in those adresses, since I'm trying to clutch at every straw i can find. Do you get the Lochmann entries from a kind of phone directory or via a different source? Another question: Since I know not a single word in ukrainian, i'll have to translate my letters. Are there any template letters for this language? Or maybe I should add a different language, too. I know a friend who is able to read and write russian perfectly. Is there a chance, that the ukrainian understand this, or are those complete different languages? I'm open for every hint. btw.: Maybe for privacy issues, it would be better not to post the whole adresses of unknown people in this forum. So feel free to send me such things via private message or email ![]() regards, simon |

The envelopes will need to be addressed in Ukrainian... that is what I sent you. As for the letters, you can write them in English, as they can get someone to translate it for them. Students in school take German as their second language. They will understand the letter written in Russian. Be cautious on the information you put in your letters. Ask questions that you already know, and wait for their answers. Good luck!
Do you want the address for Pohranychna (Погранична)? How do you want me to send it? |
