Malewany / Malewana
Hi there
My name is Richard from Leeds, England and I wondered if anybody by any chance knew anything of the surname Malewany (a). I have the death certificate and marriage certificate of my great grandmother who did in Wschowa in Poland in 1945, this is how I know her surname but I have been told that the name was more likely to have been spelt Maolowany (a). On her death certificate it states that she was born in the town of Kamieniec Podolski in the Ukraine yet her marriage certificate states another town which we believe to be Kordelivka although it was spelt slightly different on her marriage certificate. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance. Richard |

Hi Richard ,
Malewany (a) ia a Polsh version of the name. Maliovany (a) - Ukrainian one. There is the only village of Kordelivka in Ukraine ( Kalynivskyi region Vinnytska oblast) . It is not far from Kamianets-Podilskiy. it seems you have very good chances - good luck ! |

Hi Serhii
Many thanks for your reply. Is it possible to write to the archives in Kamieniec Podolski to ask for copies of documents? Would you k ow why the death certificate and marriage certificate would have different places of birth on? I assume the marriage certificate would be more accurate as my great grandmother would still of been alive to have given her place of birth to the people who filled in the marriage certificate? For reference, my great grandmother was Maria Malewany (Polish version) and her parents were Ksenofont and Melania Malewany if anybody knows anything about these names? Many thanks for your help and kindest regards Richard |

Hi Richard ,
I see that you confuse male/female/plural forms of the surname . They should be – Malewana (female ), Malewany ( male ) , Malewani ( plural) Were they Ukrainians or Poles ? Names look very much like Ukrainian . As for the archive – yes , it is possible , but is a bit troubled. They are afraid of giving personal information to unknown people. And there is a fee for the information ( in my region it is about 50 Euros ) . I think you could write to them and learn everything directly. But remember again – it isn’t easy. As for the different places – it could be just a mistake. You are on right way. |

Hi Serhii
Many thanks for your reply. I believe they must of been Ukranian as my great grandmothers death certificate states that she was born in Kamieniec Podolski. My great grandfather was Polish. Thankyou for clearing up my confusion over the male and femal forms. Thanks Richard |

HI again everyone
i have since found out that my great great grandfather Ksenofont was killed in 1917 by the Bolsheviks, it was then that my great great grandmother Melania and my great grandmother Maria escaped to Poland on a droska (?). I know its a long shot but are there any records anywhere regarding those killed by the bolsheviks which would maybe help me in finding out further information about the Ukrainian side of my family? Many thanks for all your help Richard |

Hi Richard,
it might be a long shot, below is a page of Wschowa ( Western part of Poland where in 1945 most of Poles were repatriated from Eastern parts of former Poland (Ukraina, Wolyn, Lituania etc) .Oficjalna Strona Miasta i Gminy Wschowa there is an English map sign so clic on it and you could read about Wschowa, also you can try to send them a letter and ask for a death certificate USC (where all birth death and marriage certificates are being kept). Good luck Basia |
