Hotra - Podwirna/Pidwirna from the town of Wyspa
I am looking for any information about the area my grandparents came from. They were Tekla Podwirna and Alex Hotra immigrated to the US in 1911. I can not find anything about this town, if it still exists today. My great-grandparents names were Onsfrij and Chymka Podwirna. Asafat Hotra and Feska Maksymowyog Hotra. They were Byzantine Catholic. Tekla had a sister who also came to the US and Alex had a brother named Stephen who went to Argentina. There may have been other siblings. It has been very hard to translate from one language to another. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I see he was 24 when he arrived at Ellis Island 11/2/1911 on the SS Amerika. Have not had time to examine the ship's ORIGINAL MANIFEST for all the details. Have you? Are you aware that Rochester is one of the oldest Ukrainian communities in America. The first Ukrainian immigrant, Evstachiv Makohin, arrived from the Rohatyn county in 1901. Within a few years Rochester had some 20 Ukrainian immigrants from the Rohatyn area, mostly Ukrainian Greek Catholics, who founded St. Josaphat's. ________________________________________________________________________________________ LDS (Mormons) has filmed following: Title Metrical books, 1785-1902 Authors Greek Catholic Church. Thank you so much Hannia. I will look over what you have sent me and explore.
Have a very Happy Easter!Yes, my grandfather Alex Hotra, born Oct 15, 1887, did come over Nov. 12, 1911 on the Amerika. He briefly lived in Jersey City, NJ, then moved to Chesapeake City, MD where a group of Ukrainians settled in one area and built a church (St. Basil's Ukrainian Catholic Church), which still stand today.. My grandmother Tekla (Tessie) Podwirna, born Jan 10, 1893, married Alex In NJ May 31, 1913. Tekla had a sister (possibly Anna?) who lived in New York. Maybe it was in this Rochester area? My mother remembers them coming to MD to visit when she was young and they had a son named Martin. Someone in my family thinks the last name was (Serkus- pronounced Circus?). I have not found anything on ancestry.com that matches that name. Thank you again for helping me with this wonderful information. Khrystos Voskres! I took a closer look at handwritten manifest from ship Amerika. It lists Olekra (Olexa-Oleksa, probably baptized as Oleksandr, anglicized to Alex in States). He was 5-6, blond w/blue eyes. Lists leaving father, Asafat (probably Yosafat) Hotra, behind in Wyspa. He was heading to friend's (Wasyl Hasstij???/Hanntij???) @ 848 Newark Avenue in Jersey City.
Ellis Island records show older brother Petro Hotra (5-7, 31 yrs old), arriving 3/7/1914. He left wife, Handria??? Hotra behind in village. Petro's brother, Oleksa, was residing @291 Grand Street in Jersey City at the time.
