Ozomla - Vizhomlia

Hi Everyone -

I recently found in my research that my great grandfather, Frank Karbonick, originated from Ozomla, present day Vizhomlia. I am trying to find out anything about this village and history. I see one mention that there was an Academic Legion where Pope John Paul II stayed briefly in his youth. Is there anything of interest in this village or surroundings?

The family name was Karbonick. I know of three brothers Thomko, Frank and John Karbonick. Frank and John left for Canada in 1912 and Thomko stayed behind with his wife. And that is the extent of information I have been able to find at this point.

I appreciate any detail that anyone knows

Jennie

Hello
I was there.
There is a large artificial lake near the village - a leisure site.
They have a very valuable book in this village - List of all families by house, ie each page presents the history of a single family throughout centuries.
I can send you pictures - you can also see them at Фотографії села Віжомля - Фотоальбом - сайт села Віжомля
They have a beatiful wooden church- - 450 years old -but they have spoilt it - covering it with plastic.
The village is surrounded with pine woods - where several camping sites

Thank you Irene! This is not to far away from you, is it? Thank you for the link to images. I am intrigued by the book you mention. We intend to include Vizhomlia during our visit in 2013. How restricted is the access to the book? It would be amazing to learn more about this side of the family if our family was recorded.

Currently, the book is kept in the old church and is available- however, anything might happen until 2013!
