Guide to writing letters in Ukrainian
I came across an excellent little primer for writing letters in Ukrainian that I'd like to share. The guide covers the various phrases that you would use when requesting information from various sources, such as the archives, churches and village/town mayors. There are also three examples of letters for writing to a mayor. The phrases are in English, followed by the Ukrainian translation of that phrase. Simply decide which phrases you'd like to use then highlight the Ukrainian translation, copy it to your word processor and fill in the blanks as required (names, dates, etc).
The guide also includes little extras like: (a) locating a postal code for Ukraine villages, towns and cities, (b) a translation for months of the year, and (c) how to address the envelope. The link is: English-Ukrainian Letter Writing Guide Cheers! Richard |

Hello Richard
I would recommend better writing in Engish This is a very strange Ukrainian -artificial - neither modern nor the good old language preserved by emigrants to Canada And then this is a mixture of artificial Ukrainian and Russian phrases! |

Thanks for your feedback, Irene.
Of course, I'm unable to critique the style or quality of the Ukrainian. Conversely, the English phrases are examples of what I would use myself when writing a letter. Perhaps this thread belongs in the Language forum, rather than the Genealogy forum? Cheers! Richard |

Richard,
Jim Onyschuk, who put this LETTER WRITING site together, was a member here in the days when there was not all that much available and writing to Ukrainian Archives in English got you no response. I think he did a pretty good job and it has worked well for many over the years. Jim currently chairs one of the important Genealogy Groups in Canada. Ukraine.com is listed as one of the org's 10 most useful travel links. Ukraine.com is also listed in the their favorite forums links. TUGG Homepage
