More likely CHUBIRKA.

There are appx 125+ Turjanica living in Ukraine today. Most are in the Zakarpatska oblast/region, spread mostly thru large towns Uzhorod, Mukachevo, Berehovo and another half dozen+ villages. The surname has geographic root, the Turja River and that is a long river. I found villages like Horonda, Svalyava, Stabychovo, Chynadyivo and Pasika ++.

We need to locate Mihal Turjanica immigration records. Otherwise it is a near impossible task.

Marya had to have a passport to travel back to Hungary> Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1908???

All these names are one and the same place at different times in history. Do any of them ring a bell?

I found both Turjanica(Turianytsia) and Chubirka in Svalyava, today district center town > Ukraine.

Ukrainian, Ruthenian, Russian Svalyava, Hungarian Szolyva, Slovak Svaľava, Czech Svalava (Svaljava), German Schwallbach, the Yiddish Svalive, Svalyavy, Svalyave, Svalyive.

PS> Are you related to the famous Rusyn editor/publisher of "Rusyn Free Word", Michael I. Turianytsia?

Dave,

With Ruth's help, it looks like I am 50% correct in my assumption that your ancestral town is probably Svalyava (ó×ÁÌÑ×Á in Ukrainian). It looks like a very charming Eastern European town. Located 14 miles ENE of Mukachevo. The name Svalyava is derived from preSlavonic word SOLVA, which means PLACE WHERE SALT WATER FLOWS. Today the town is still famous for its health resorts and healthful mineral springs.

Geopolitical history:

From late 18th century to 1919 Szolyva > Bereg > Hungary.
Interwar Period (1919-1938) Svalava > Podkarpathia > Czechoslovakia.
Post WW2 region became a part of SSR Ukraine, under Soviet domain until 1991, when Ukraine became independent.

Looks like Grandmother's side was more prolific. There are 70+ Chubirka listed in Svalyava and I am listing only the males because list is lenghty.
