Thank you for your help. I'm sure that Kulivtsi is the right village (I have a vague memory of my gandfather speaking of a town that sounds the same). And Hannia, thanks for travel info, we are going in September and will look for Babyn.

Ruth did a great job of locating documentation. We can always count on her to find that needle in the haystack.

Now that you know that GGrandfather's given name was Dmytro, you can look thru the church records and put a tree together before you make that trip to your ancestral selo. The village is small, consisting of appx 650 people. There may very well be surviving family members still residing in the village.

One of our members, forum name ace interpreter (real name Wasyl), lives in Chernivtsi. He can probably make some calls to the mayor's ofc and ask about any surviving family. He can also help you w/arrangements in the area. He is fluent in English and his rates are very fair to our membership.

PS> There is a Ukrainian adage, that it is easier to sleep the eternal sleep for a Ukrainian, when he has Ukrainian soil for a pillow. Consider bringing back a little home soil to scatter on Grandfather's grave. It is a great expression of gratitude for all the sacrifices he made, that you and yours should have better opportunities in life.

Hannia, I had such an instant emotional reaction to this statement. It is something I now know I will do when I go to Ukraine! Bring home some soil to spread on my ancestors grave. Wow! You have no idea how this stirred up such a powerful emotional reaction and I am not sure why. Thank you for the idea.

I just realized your village of Kulivtsi is just east of my mother's village of Repuzhintsy and just north across the Dneister is my father's village of Kasperivtsi !

Nikola Harkot

Nick married my Grandmother quite late in life (after my Grandfather died). She was born the same year in the same town, Kulivtsi, and had known Nick since childhood. They made a trip back to the old country in 1971. I have been looking for more information about my Ukrainian heritage since we are planning a trip to the Black Sea next year. I just happened upon your message and it would be nice to know how you fit into the picture? I realize that it has been a long time since your original post but I hope you will receive my reply.
