I am trying to find information on my grandparents. Wasyl Pankiw- born in Galicia around 1885. Came to Canada via New York in 1912. Married Maria Mokrycky in 1909. Had one son Nicholas born in Galicia in 1911
She came to Canada with her son in 1914 via Italy and New Yord to join Wasyl. Information from her deceased sons indicates she came from the village of Daleshiv, Horodenka county.I get no results searching for her maiden name or village. HELP

Following are old Church Records for Grandmother's selo/village Daleshove. Her birth yr is not covered here, but ask IreneLviv to help fill in the gaps for you and then you can do the rest of the research yourself.

Wies/village Daleszowa was founded in 1474. It was predominantly a Ruthenian village w/its own Greek Catholic Church. Horodenka was both the powiat (administrative district-county) and gmina (judicial-tax district) > Stanislawow region (until appx 1965) when it became Ivano-Frankivska oblast. In this time frame it was the historic Galicia/Halyczyna Province, administered by ethnic Poles for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. During the Interwar Period (1919-1938) it came under Reconstituted Poland's domain. Post WW2 this region became a part of SSR Ukraine, under Soviet domain until 1991, when it became independent Ukraine.

Today Daleshove = Далешове in Ukrainian has a population of 405.
PS> What religion did Grandmothjer practice. Was she Greek Catholic or Orthodox? There is also an Orthodox Church in this village.

Thanks Paul and Hanna,any clues on the spelling of my grandmothers maiden name. Mokrycky - family say this is the english pronounciation.

Мокрицький = Mokrycky (pretty sure - Irene, am I right or might it be Мокрецький?)
Pankiw = Панків

Given that Marya and son were emigrating from Galicia/Halyczyna Province (what is Western Ukraine today), Nicholas would have been called Mykola by family and his metryka (baptismal certificate) might read as Mykolaj.

Just an FYI, that in the "Our Legacy - the History of the Smoky Lake area" (Alberta, Canada) there is a small writeup of a Mike Pankew (possible variation of Pankiw?) who was born in 1884 in the village of Harodenko, Galicia. It doesn't give much info; it says when he was 16 he met some Americans (doesn't say where) that helped smuggle him into Canada in 1900. Hmm, wonder why smuggling was necessary. He arrived in Montreal. It describes his life in Canada, but doesn't give much more about his roots. He married Jessie Strembitsky.
