In both Canada and U.S. many people changed their names to English spelling. Maybe because it was easier. I know of people who went to the U.S. Their name was Kopachansky and became Kopan. Always seemed odd to me.

Pankiw family

Hello,
I am replying to you Pankiw family research. My great aunt married a Jan (John) Pankiw in 1914 in Woonsocket, RI. Jan Pankiw was from Czerniow, Austria Galicia and supposedly born Aug 10, 1890. He died in the 1940's also in Woonsocket, RI. There are his descendants living in the Mass/RI area. Is there any relationship to this Pankiw? Marcia Feinberg

From late 18th century to 1918 wies/village Czerniow was predominantly a Ruthenian/Ukrainian village w/its own Greek Catholic church. Both the filial Roman Catholic Church and the Jewish Kahal were in Bukaczowce. Rohatyn was the powiat (adm district - county) and Bursztyn was the gmina (judicial-tax district) > Stanislawow region (until 1964 when it became Ivano-Frankivska ) > Galicia/Halyczyna Province, administered by ethnic Poles for the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

FYO The two villages Daleshevo and Cherniow are not even within a thirty mile radius of one another.
