I am looking for any who can help? My family came to the USA in 1900s. My ggrandfather was Mihaly Relitzky from Felso-veresmart, Hungary (Velikaya Kopanya, Ukraine). Is there any archives our someone that lives near this area that could help? My family was Jewish and I know that is important when researching records in this area due to all birth and marriages were held by Rabbinic records and Church records. I have tried but I cant seem to get any help.... Where can I find records or is there anyone that can help????????

I have spent a lot of time researching on JewishGen but have found nothing. I hired a gentleman from Romania to research for me in Baia Mare (Baia Mare from what I was told is where most of the records were contained for Maramaros county, Hungary) and there was no records. I then contacted Maramaros Jewish Project and they told me that they do not know where the records are for Velikaya Kopanya and said to check in Khust? So, I tried to contact researchers from the Ukraine and have not received a response as of yet.

My grandfather's was born between 1866-1876 (He lied about his age upon entry of the US)

My family has been a big puzzle to put together...

Nevazonosito has Alsoveresmart as Mala Kopannya today > formerly in Nagyszolosi jaras???

Khust district makes no sense. If records are in District Archives they would be in Vynogradiv (Nagyszolosi).

I am guessing, but I think they should be in Uzhorod Archives, which today covers Berehove Archives as well. Yrs ago there was a Loius Schonfeld, head of Hungary SIG, who claimed Jewish records for what is Zakarpatska Ukraine today were in Berehove.

My family came back and forth to the US from 1902 -1912 about 8 different trips. The first record on Ellis Island stated his last place of residence was Bereg, Hungary but it gets more confusing from there....

1902 Passenger Lists is the first record found. (Hamburger Passagier listen, 1850-1934 Hamburg Passenger Lists, 1850-1934 ) Mihal Reliczky, age 25, born abt 1877, single, lived Bereg, Hungary, departed Hamburg on 14 Aug 1902 on SS Columbia , via Southampton; Cherbourg; New York. Says he is single, conflict here with estimated marriage date of 1901 found on 1920 Census.

1904 - Passenger list - Mihaly Relitzky, age 27 , lived Oras????, Hungary, says he is Hebrew [Jewish] sailed from Trieste, Italy on SS Ultonia, arrived New York 24 Aug 1904. Traveling with wife, Apolonia age 28, born about 1876 and daughter Margit age 2.

I was told he was in the Military so I am guessing that’s why he lived in different areas? So something else confused me was my ggrandfather married my ggrandmother who was Christian????? So, some of the family stayed Jewish while the others never knew they were Jewish and this is where I may have a problem finding anything because of the intermarriage.

Your family certainly does have an interesting travel resume. I thought i would look for your family at the EI site. Perhaps I have found a few manifests that you could not find. They are listed below. I would guess that your folks would be considered "birds of passage"y the agents at EI?

Yes, I have seen most of these records but there are a few I haven't ... I was told he gave different names upon entry to the states fearing being turned away. My ggrandfather bought real state in Ohio and Indiana where he would rent or mortgage homes to new immigrates from the Old country. Here is one more record that is new to me that I found:
