Looking for village
Harry Fersovitch (Firsowicz) was born Oct 14, 1919 in Osipouzcze, Poland according to his obituary. Can anyone tell me where this is? He came to Canada with his mother and siblings in 1923 and settled in
Alberta. Diane |

с. Йосипович╕ > Стрийський район > Льв╕вська область ???
Harry Firsowycz was probably baptized Hryhorij, equivalent to Gregory in English. ______________________________________________________________ I agree w/ Irene. I too think it is the Y(J)osypovychi, TODAY in Stryj raion/district > Lvivska oblast/region > Ukraine. During the Interwar Period (1919-1938) this region came under the domain of Reconstituted Poland, which had not existed for the previous 125+ yrs. In this time frame the village was in the Zydachiv district > Stanislawow wojiwodsteo/region (Ivano-Frankivska). Title Metrical books, 1835-1914 Authors Greek Catholic Church. Juseptycze (Żydaczów) (Main Author) Notes Microreproduction of original manuscripts at the Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine in L′viv. ????
We are focused on Ukrainian Genealogy here and as a result we sometimes forget that there were other countries that were under Reconstituted Polish domain during the Interwar Period, like BELARUS. I found records for Anna Firsowych and her 5 sons or 4 sons & 1 daughter (cannot make out last child's given name) immigrating to Canada (via Ellis Island, New York entry port) and they were coming from Kobryn > Poland??? Anna's oldest child ,Gzregorz (Gregory - frequently anglicized to Harry), was 11 yrs old. Examined manifest - Family was heading to join husband and father, Nikita/Mykita, in Glendon, Alberta. This was Oct 6, 1931. Anna left her mother, Marya Liwanowicz behind in village Onuskowicze> Horodec. The oldest child Gzregorz was 11, giving birth yr appx 1919-1920. There are also other records showing Mikita Firsowych, arriving in April, 1928, and listed as Ukrainian coming from Osipowies. Mikita used Halifax entry port. Probably one of several trips, because Anna's youngest child was appx 2 upon immigration. Anna might have gotten pregnant right before he left, which would make teh boy appx 2 yrs + several mos. Mikita is shown as naturalized in 1936. _______________________________________________________________________ There were Ruthenians/Ukrainians (Polieschuky, micro-ethnic Ukrainian group) living in this region of what is Belarus today. Kobryn was a county and there is a Osipovychi in Kobryn. Most Polieschuky practiced Greek Catholic Religion. Records should be in Lviv??? Orthodox Records are probably in Minsk or Grodno Archives??? Poliesie wojiwodstwo/region > Reconstituted Poland (Interwar Period Belarus) records for GC may also be in Vilnius Archives > Lithuania??? ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Coincidence: I was very recently instrumental in locating family for someone in Argentina. The immigration to Argentina took place during Interwar Period. The passport read Kobryn. Family was Orthodox, from Starodubtsy. TODAY THE CLUSTER VILLAGE IS ONYUSKIVCHI > KOBRYN > BREST > BELARUS !!!
