Kapustynskyj family, Bortniki, Ukraine
I wonder if anyone can help me. My father Oleksa (or Oleska) Kapustynskyj came from the Ukraine.
Although he died in 1998 my wife and I have decided to visit the Ukraine and try and see for ourselves where he was brought up. His history is a little vague and was something that was not discussed in depth at home. From what he told us he was born in Bortniki, near Lvov on 30 March 1913. His father owned a farm and I remember him telling me that his father was killed when he fell off a stallion on the farm. I understand that during the war he was part of the Galician division in the German army. He was captured near Gratz in Austria and taken to PoW Camp in Rimini, Italy. In 1947 he was taken to Liverpool, UK. He mentioned a jam factory in Sheffield, after this he was definitely at a Displaced Persons Camp in Bottesdale, Suffolk. From here he went to Farndon Fields Camp in Market Harborough working on local farms where he met my mother. We have looked up Bortniki and we think there are 2. We would be most grateful if anyone could give us any information regarding his family history in the Ukraine. |

Hi PK
I just finished reading the following book that may interest you: DPs Europe' Displaced Persons, 1945-1951 by Mark Wyman. Also reading the following book about the Ukrainian 14th Waffen -SS Division. About half way thru it . Title: Pure Soldiers or Sinister Legion by Sol Littman. Ch 10 talks about Rimini. Tempo |

LDS has copied Greek Catholic Records for your ancestral village, but the cut off is 1912. Consider asking Irene to fill in the gap for you. Your surname is concentration in the Ternopilska region. Very few in Lvivska region. Do you have any idea what was your paternal Grandmother's name might have been??? Father's baptismal certificate would be valuable to your search???

There are photos here that you should examine. These were taken in Rimini POW Camp.
