MOCHNACZ from Bilyj Potik Village Chomiakowka RC Parish Czortkow

Researching my great-grandmother Jerzyna (ERYNA) Pastuszka Mochnacz from Bilyj Potik village, Czortkow district Chomiakowka RC parish. Joannis Mochnacz (Eryna’s husband my great-grandfather and son Gabriel Stanislaw Mochnacz (my grandfather)
Eryna DOB: 1859 Tombstone inscription lived 53 years and died May 10 1912, Krakow AB.
Gabriel Mochnacz married Teckla Bojko (daughter of Theodore and Josefa Bojko) February 7, 1903. Settled in the Krakow area in April 1904. (Alberta)
Trying to establish the year and ship Eryna was on when she came to Canada. 1911 Alberta census says 1904 (hard to read). Impossible as she is not on the 1906 census, June 24, 1906
Gabriel Mochnacz served in the Austrian Army 1895 to 1898. Left Bremerhaven Germany May 21, 1989 via H.F.Glade arrived October 6, 1898 at Honolulu. Assigned to Haiku Sugar Plantations Maui. Gabriel Mochnacz page 101 of Hawaiian ordeal: Ukrainian contract Workers, 1897 – 1910
Summary: Any connections with the village of Bilyj Potik or the surname Mochnacz would be much appreciated.

Ruth,

The trip to Hawaii was via Canada. Original exit port was in Germany. I read most of the material a bunch of yrs ago, but I think I remember that part correctly.

Lorraine,

I see you have already been welcomed by our best. If a document exists, Ruth will find it.

What a life Gabriel had. Turn of the century Hawaiian plantations were notorious for the type of work and the work loads. The conditions were hellish. Immigrants were conned by the agents at the German exit ports. These people had no idea what they were headed for.

Have you examined any films available thru LDS? There are two sets of RC Church Records. There is village Bialy Potok that was absorded into Kosiv > Chortkiv and then there is Chomiakówka abosorbed into Yahielnytsia. ???There is also a Biały Potok, a village in the administrative district of Gmina Krościenko nad Dunajcem, within Nowy Targ County, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, in southern Poland, close to the border with Slovakia. Regional capital was Krakow.

Are you sure he was from Chortkiv?

I found only one Mochnach/Mokhnach = Мохнач in Ukranian (w/telephone) in all of the Ternopil region.
Currently living in Chortkiv, the district center town.

Мохнач М.╤. Чортк╕вський район, Чортк╕в, Млинарська 22325

I just called telephone number in Chortkiv. A Russian woman answered and told me she has recently been issued this # by post office because it had become available, but her address was different. She knew no one w/that surname. You could try writing.

Are you aware that most ethnic Poles were resettled by 1947?

Hannia you have been a big help. Gabriel was from the village of Bily Potik which was documented on the ships manifest from the Hawaiian archives. I am assuming that Bilyj Potik was in the Czortkow district. Thank you for referring me to the films at LDS. That is my last step in searching. Hope I would find some info on these films as that would be my last resort. How fascinating this all is.
I appreciate all the info you sent me.
Regards,
lorraine

From late 18th century to 1918 Bialy Potok had a population of appx 1,200 & 239 houses. 80% were ethnic Poles. 20% were Ruthenian/Ukrainian. There were several Jewish families in the village as well. The filial Roman Catholic Church was in Chomiakowka and the filial Greek Catholic Church was in Romaszowka. Czortkow was both the POWIAT (administrative/district - county) and the GMINA (judicial/tax district )> Tarnipolskie Wojiwodstwo/Region > Galicia Province, administered by ethnic Poles for the AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN EMPIRE. 1918-1919 Region became a part of the West Ukrainian Nat'l Republic. 1919-1939 Tarnipol came under Reconstituted Poland's domain. Technically Poland had not existed as a geopolitical entity for the previous 125+ yrs. Post WW2 this region became a part of SSR Ukraine, under Soviet domain until 1991 when Ukraine became independent.

Halgal: Genealogy of Halychyna/Eastern Galicia

Loretta, how is your Polish?

LDS will not be the end of the line. The films will just open up another door to possible surviving family in Ukraine, but more likely in Poland.
