Zauko/Zhavko from Bahnuvate > Turkiv > Lviv

Quote:
I am looking for some help in finding out about my beloved Grandmother. After her arrival, I have learned a lot, but wish to know about my ancestry in BAHNUVATE, Turka region of Lviv Oblast. My grandmother Marya ZAWKO (Zauko) was born on July 15, 1892. Her father was YURKO and her mother was Anna M Culsiou ( this fact I gleaned from a marriage application in PA. My grandmother could neither read nor write so I have NO idea what they were trying to spell!) She came to America with her aunt Marya CUCEK (CUCYK) also from Bahnuvate. Her husband was Nikolai (Mikolai) CUCEK (CUCYK). These were the spellings I found on the ship manifest. I have been to Lviv and would like to return to see the grand mother/father land.

Closer transliteration for your Zauko is Zhavko = öÁ×ËÏ.

Today there are 332 people carrying Zhavko surname living in Ukraine, 19 of whom are listed in Babusia's selo/village Bahnuvate = âÁÇÎÕ×ÁÔÅ. The village was founded in 1654. Today it is hamlet size w/population of 384. It and selo Mezhirya is clustered w/selo Rykiv. They share the same Village Administration
and post ofc. The name of the Village Mayor is Vasyl Zhavko, son of Vasyl.

PS> I am not 100% sure, but I think your Babusia had Boyko roots. This is a micro-ethnic Ruthenian/Ukrainian group. This conjecture is based on the location of the village in the Turkivskij raion.

LDS has filmed your ancestral village. Have you ever researched LDS Films? Looks like you might not be able to dig up Babusia's records, but you should be able to pick up info re Pradeedo (GGrandfather) Yurko (translates to George in English) and wife and track the family back to 1785.

Before doing anything thoroughly explore following link. This is probably the best resource for anyone researching Galician/Halychanyn heritage. The Vital Records Section has exc HOW-TO info.

Zawko

äñëõà I appreciate what you did for me so much. I am trying to work with the LDS but so far I am waiting 4 weeks to receive the miicrofims I ordered!! Most importantly, can you make a guess as to what my grandmother was trying to say when the clerk spelled her mother's name as M CULSIOU or M CULSION? This would be extremely helpful IF or WHEN I receive the microfilms. I tried making guess with my Ukrainian-English dictionary and nothing seemed to work.

Bare in mind that most of the GC Records use Latin, so you should be able to recognize the surnames. In most Eastern European villages a generation was appx 17-20+ yrs. Find Jurko's dob in 1870+ and then look for his matrimonial record.

Births 1878 -- Births, marriages, deaths 1879-1891 -- Marriages, deaths 1892 (some years out of order; filmed with Mołdawsko and Ryków) - FHL INTL Film [ 1922096 Item 2 ]

Be patient, the films will come, but do stay on the Family Center.
