Olga, I finally found Ivan's immigration records. His name was badly transliterated, so it took a long time to examine each name. I actually went through 721 names.
He is listed in Ellis island Records as Swarc Zawyzk.. The Passenger manifest is very clear. It is Ivan, son of Maxym. Iwan Zauko arrived on the SS Kaiserin Auguste, November 28, 1910. He was 17 yrs old, single, emigrating from Rykow > Austria and going to Elmira, New York, to his cousin, Mykolaj Stefanik. This may have been his first trip? Many immigrants made several trips for work. I looked in the White Pages and there quite a few ZAWKO living in the Elmira area. Did Ivan's wife also emigrate? What was her given name. I have already left a telephone message for a Robert Zawko in Elmira.

Thank's a lot Hannia!
Zhavko Ivan Maksymovych lived in Rykiv village(at that time it was under Austria). He has brother Mykola who died in 1986. They had been written letters to each other by 1975, but then the address was lost. From the letters we know that Ivan had many children. His wife was Marja(Maria) she was from Bagnuvate village. They lived in NY city. Ivan's nephew Zhavko Vasyl is 90 years old and he wants to see his family badly! Olga. |

Olga,
I found no Zhavko living in New York City. There was a Nina, who was born in 1959 and died about 4 yrs ago. I have checked all phone books. It also makes no sense that Ivan and Marya had all these children and lived in New York City. Ivan had to have been very, very rich to have had many children and have lived in the New York City. The cost of living in New York City was and is very high. Did Ivan send packages? Maybe the parcel company in Lviv has some records? Check with everyone in the family and ask if there is anyone who might have kept the letters from America. In New York City there are over 8 million people. In New York State there are 20 million +. In America there are 300 million +. Check again with family members. Maybe someone will remember something.

Olga and Karen,
Arriving at Ellis Island in New York City - in December 1908 there were 6 emigrants from Bahnuwate on the SS Scharnhorst from Bremen. Ilko Demkowicz Ivan Cucyk (Olga, this could also be transliterated as Tsytsyk?) Pawlo Cucyk Marya Zauko (Karen's Babusia) Marya Cusyk (father is Oleksa) 30 yrs old - joining husband Mykolaj in Pennsylvania Katherzyna Cucyk (left Grandfather in village - P. Zamadka) They were all going to Twin Rocks, Pennsylvania. _________________________________________ So far there were Zawko and Cysyk gong to Twin Rocks, Pennsylvania and Zawko and Stefanik going to Elmira, New York. Olga, Karen will be in Lviv @ uniiversity in June. You should get together and try to put ths whole puzzle together. You both have to go knocking on doors in the two villages. __________________________________________ PS> Irene, do you have a direct e-mail address for Karen to give to Ohlya?

Zhavko legacy
I have been studying the metrical book from Bahnuvate. There were three Zhavko brothers including my great grandfather whose mother was Justyna Zawko. The three boys were illegitimate. There was Huriar Georgius ( my great grandfather) and his brothers Procopius and Demetrius. They appear to have been from Moldawsko before George settled in Bahnuvate. So far I know that Justina's dad was Michael and her mom was Eva Pohranyczna. I also have notes about other Zawko (Zhavko) families. I am still studying and "figuring out." Karen |
