Dunajczuk From Town of Kachin

Hi, I am a new member to this website and I'm looking for help in finding out more about the town of Kachin (Kachyn), Kamin-Kashyrsky Raion, in Volyn Oblast, Ukraine, where my grandfather came from, and if there could still be any relatives living in the area.
My grandfather was Trofim Dunajczuk (chuk), who left Kachin, Ukraine (Russia at the time) in March of 1912 and came to America. He was about 21 years old. I have a fasimile of his birth certificate, which is not in good condition, but I believe his fathers name was Damian or Demjan, and his grandfather's name was Eutychiusza. Trofim had a younger sister, named Catherine, who stayed in Kachin and it is believed married and had children, but I don' t know her married name. I know it's a big task, but someday if possible, I would like to make contact with her family. I'm also interested in going further back in my grandfather's line and would appreciate any guidance in how and where to go for that. Thanks.

TODAY there are 168 Dunajczuk (Дунайчук in Ukrainian) residing in Ukraine, of which appx 25+ that still live in Kachyn (Качин means BELONGING TO DUCKS), located on the Kaczynske ozero / Duck's Lake. Village was founded in 1553, 61 yrs after Columbus discovered America. Today it still exists w/population of 910.

Following is the Orthodox Church where Grandfather may have been baptized??? I could not find date for construction.

PS> I found more info re church. It was built in 1589. It is wooden construction w/no metal nails. Renovated several times in the last 500 yrs. It is an official architectural landmark. Style typical of region.

Looks like Grandfather arrived at Ellis Island via Libau and Halifax on the ESTONIA, steamer owned by Russian American Line. In 1913 the ship was burned. Grandfather's name probably butchered by volunteer key punch operator for Ellis Island Museum. Ship's original manifest shows name very clearly. Arrival date April 6, 1912. He was heading to Lincoln NH and meeting up w/friend Pawel/Pawlo Kovalczuk.

There is also a Danylo coming from same village, but he was heading for Virginia coal mines. His father's name was Ivan.

Red are Dunajczuk currently living in selo Kachyn. I included others from same general vicinity. Kovel is nearby district center town. Lutsk is Vohlyn regional capital.Turisk is medium size town. Kachyn is located in Kamien-Kashyrskij. There is one in Green in Poyasky > Zhytomir region, which abuts the old Vohlyn region, where I found the name interesting???

There are as many Dunajczuk living in Eastern Ukraine, in regions like Odessa, Dniepropetrovsk , and a handful in Kyiv.

Several months ago I was instrumental in locating a family in Rakiv Lis (Crayfish Forest), appx 16 kms away from Kachyn, for Canadian Ukrainian. We can probably use family member there to make the trip to Kacyn and make personal inquiries on your behalf.

You are very amazing. My wife and I never imagined that all this information was available and that so much would be provided so quickly. We thank you so much for what you have shared so far and for all your assistance. We have shared your information with my mother Anne, who is also very excited about all this. She is 82 years old. Trofim also had a son, named Paul, who is older than my mother by a few years and who is also living.

My grandfather Trofim was actually called Anthony here in the US. Not sure if that had anything to do with Ellis Island or if it was just easier to fit in.

I got to know my grandfather as he lived in the same house with my parents as I grew up. Unfortunately he spoke mostly in Ukrainian to my mom, which I never learned, but he knew just enough english to communicate with the rest of us. My mom over the years has shared much of the information about her father with us.

My grandfather had told my mom of being near water and had become a good swimmer as a child. As I learned about his home town and saw, via the internet, the satellite views of Kachin with the huge lake, I was excited to piece that together and now I am excited to know the name as "Duck's Lake".

I do have the Ellis Island record that you mentioned. My mom always thought that Pawel Kawalczuk, was Trofim's uncle originally from the same town, but I don't think we know for sure if he was his uncle or just a friend. We know he did go to Lincoln, New Hampshire to work as a lumberjack.

I also know that Trofim had an older brother (name unknown), who when he was about 21 was called to be in the Army and never returned home. When Trofim turned 21, his parents sent him to America to avoid him from potentially having the same fate. I only know of the older brother and the younger sister Catherine (could be Katrina or something like that), previously mentioned. They did communicate via letters over the years after he came here and he did send money back to the family. Unfortunately, he did throw out all the letters after his wife died.

My family would be thrilled to re-establish the connection lost after all these years and can't thank you enough for your help.
If there is anything in addition that you need, please let me know. I do have .jpg image of Trofim's birth certificate if that will help. It is a fascimile of the original that Catherine obtained in 1939 and sent as the original was lost.
