Good evening everyone, my name is Anna and I like many other 1st generation children whose parents settled in the UK after WW2 would like some help in tracing my late father's family.

He had a most unusual surname (unusual to me that is: Tuckys). Having done a bit of research on ancestry.com I found some information about my grandfather (father's father ) his name was listed on a shipping record I think for 1912-1913 and his name was spelt Tychyj.

Apart from these two pieces of information I know only little bits about my father's family and would like to know the town or village or county where he was born (he was born on Feb 19 1926, today would have been his 85 birthday, and what does his family name mean.

I hope you can help me with my search.

Kind regards

Anna

Welcome Anna.

Surname Tychyj (ôÉxiÊ in Ukr) means QUIET.

Contact the Bad Arolsen Archives. These archives in Germany will provide you w/details of his exact experience during WW2 and other personal details such as EXACT PLACE OF BIRTH. Dear Hannia

What an amazing person you are. In one momentous e mail, you have directed me to where I need to search for my late father's place of birth and the events of his life during WW2 and what happened to him before he came to England.

He didn't talk much of his past except like most Ukrainians, he was patriotic and followed events "at home" on the radio as much as he could. He told me many times that he had such a happy childhood and then war came along and separated his family.

I am so pleased that the surname means "quiet". My children do not think I am anything but quiet, but it does fit with my personality and I am so pleased so far, that this is from my father's side of the family. He was a quiet, kind and emotional man and such a good looking man (to me anyway) and I feel emotional as I write this e mail to you.

I will of course contact the Bad Arolsen Archives via e mail and let you know how I get on.

Kindest regards

Anna

PS Is Hannia the same translation into English as my name Anna or does it mean something else.

PPS. My father wanted to call me Hanna, but my mother thought the name was a bit old fashioned, so I was baptised Anna instead.

PPS It's so comforting to read other peoples's stories and find information about their families particularly the one from David Wolodymyr in Scotland. His story sounds very similar to mine.

Look forward to your response.

Kindest regards

Anna

For Hannia

Dear Hannia

Whilst I am waitng for luch to cook, I forgot to mention that my father was indeed a displaced person and that he would have been around 19 years old at the end of WW2.

He had 5 sisters and 1 brother and that is as much as I know at present. He said he lived by the forest and that when he was little he would pick mushrooms in the forest and he would have to walk a great distance to school and that my father's first name is Wolodymyr.

Hope this information helps.

Regards

Anna

Dear Anna,
I was reading your posts, and my father had just yesterday been telling me a story about picking mushrooms in the forest. We seem to have some things in common, as my father's name is also Wolodymyr born in 1925, and his mothers name was Hanna, (I'm guessing that was why your father wanted that name for you). I named my first daughter Anna after my Grandma, dropping the H too. My dad was a DP too.
Good luck with your search, I will enjoy seeing you make progress and achieve your goals.

Wolodymyr

Hi Hannia

What a small world it is, which area was your father from and which part of Ukraine was the forest located in.

How did he come to be displaced as I am sure there must have been tens of thousands of people moved by force away from their families.

Look fwd to your response.

Regards

Anna

Father's surname

Hi Hannia

Sorry forgot to ask before, is my father's surname a common name in Ukraine or are there not many people out there who share the same name.

Secondly, are you and your colleagues historians with university degrees or are you all friends who have developed this forum.

Regards

Anna
