Registered Cossacks

Hey all,

Was reading a history book this week and came across reference to registered Cossacks from the mid 1600's. I've heard that there are some surviving lists of names but have never actually come across such a thing online in all of my searching. Is there are online access to names of registered Cossacks in history, anywhere between 1600-1900? Do such lists actually exist?

Thanks, and for those of you in Canada have a great long weekend!
Steve

Stephen,

Little Henry (Hrytsko) looks like a happy, bouncy baby.

Hannia, fantastic,
I almost filled in the registration form, but somehow I don't think it would work for me
An interesting site, I saw a lovely story about a Japanese who married a Ukrainian girl, and became a cossack, travelling to Ukraine to get his Bandura. Was I dreaming? look here Sakuma-san becomes Sakumachuk

Wolodymir,

What harm would there be for you to check the surname? You never know. There were Cossacks in Vohlyn, who came to do war (I think circe 17th+ century) and some stayed.

The Cossacks were not ethnically a homogeneous group. They were a bunch of bad boys that included all kinds of micro-ethnic groups from what is Eastern Ukraine today. What tied them together was their love of freedom.

In the case of the modern day Samurai, it was his love of the Hopak and the Bandura, and given he was from Japan, his love of freedom too?

Hannia,
eloquently put, it is indeed that sense of freedom in the songs and dances that lifts our souls. There is a lot in common between the Samurai and Cossack, so little wonder it fits him well.
