Bala = âÁÌÁ, Kozak =ëÏÚÁË, Chersak = þÅÒÓÁË, Hrehoraschuk = çÒÅÇÏÒÁÝÕË

selo/village Chornushovychy = þÏÒÎÕÛÏ×ÉÞ¦ > Pustomyty =ðÕÓÔÏÍÉÔÉ raion/district > Lviv = ìØ×¦× oblast/region >Ukraine
latest zip 81143. Population 648.

From late 18th century to 1918 Czarnuszowice was predominantly a Ruthenian/Ukrainian village w/its own Greek Catholic Church. Filial RC Church was in Wyzniany. Lwow was the powiat (administrative district-county) and Winniki was the gmina> Galicia/Halyczyna Province, administered by ethnic Poles for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. During Interwar Period (1919-1938) this region came under the domain of Reconstituted Poland, which technically had not existed as a geopolitical entity for the previous 125+. Used Polish version of all place names. Post WW2 this region became a part of SSR Ukraine under Soviet domain until 1991, when Ukraine became independent.

Hi Irene,
Thanks very much for the quick reply.
All I know is my husbands grandfather came from this village. His name was Wasyl Balla, his father was Elias Bala married Hanah Namasna (her parents were Matthew & Martha nee Houcecoua)
Wasyl came to Canada in 1899 with his mother and son Phillip.
His brothers Joseph & Dymetro Bala left there in 1893 first went to the USA and 5yrs later to Canada.
Very interesting to learn there are still Balas in the village!!

Thank-you very much Hannia.
Will have to get my sister-in-law to help some as she can speak and read some Ukrainian.
We are planning a trip so we can see where the family came from!

Marj,

Selo Chornushovychy is right outside of the regional capital of Lviv, which is a historical city dating back to 12th century. Lovely place w/lots to see.

With Irene's help you might even be able to meet up w/surviving family still residing in the village.

This part of Ukraine is the migratory home to the Black Stork from South Africa. In some cases the nests have been located in the same place for generations upon generations. They are considered good luck to the villagers and before storks' return, villagers often place potatoes in the nests as welcome meals.
