Thumbs up Many thanks

Hello from cloudy Vancouver Island,
I really appreciate the information you have sent me and I will look in to this further. I ordered more film for births and deaths so I hope to get more info. If I find anything for you I will certainly send it on. In reading previous posts I noticed the various spellings of your grandfather's name and one I saw on settlers to Smoky Lake/Pakan is Georgyi. However, as you have read, the spelling is probably in the hand and ear of the immigration officials. It is a challenge isn't it, deciphering the writing of various languages, not knowing which one it really is at times.
Since Ukraine was consistently taken over by other countries it did not get an opportunity to establish itself in any strong manner. This is the sad reality of 'our' country.
I read about two books that I am going to try purchase, one being, A Journey Through The History of Ukraine by Anna Reid and the other, Borderland but no author stated. The book that created a stir in me to start looking at my heritage was, In Fear of The Barbed Wire Fence, author Lubomyr Luciuk. It is about the ..."first national internment operations and the Ukrainian Canadians, 1914-1920. I do not know how my grandfather avoided this but I am glad he did. The small monument at Jasper National Park brings more sadness. This large group of hard working men were taken and forced into hard labor when they came to this country to seek freedom and make a better life for themselves and their families.
I do pray that when I visit Ukriane this September I will see a people with strength and hope.
Once again, thanks tons L.
Joy

This is getting spooky. I happen to be reading Anna Reid's book right now - am about half way thru and it is a very good read. The title is "Borderland - A journey through the history of Ukraine" so you are really looking for just one book. Another book I ordered but have not received yet is "Ukrainian Geneology: A Beginners Guide" by John D Pihach - can be found here: https://www.ciuspress.com/catalogue/...nner%27s-guide.

So where is the "expert's guide" to Ukrainian geneology?

The Book

This is very interesting to find that you are in the process of reading Borderland... After I sent you the message I realized that both books were one and the same. Ought to have checked at the outset. Do you remember Phyllis Basaraba and her brother Eddie? Phyllis did her Masters in Ukrainian Folklore and has travelled there over 20 times for research, to purchase product she sells online as well as to see her family. She has given me some insight in to the lives of the average Ukrainian family. ~Joy

Wasn't there a link in this post to a writeup about the town of Toporoutz - a link was given to an English Google translation of it. I cannot seem to find it now - many thanks to whomever can provide it again.
