Phrase in church records has us febuddled.

For three years I have been assisting a friend in researching his Ukrainian roots .
We are puzzled by a phrase in transcriptions of birth, death and marriage entries in records of St. Nicolas Church , village of Chiscareni , in the Moldova Civil Registrations Archive in Chisinau, Moldova.

Various church record entries during the period 1882 thru 1902 refer to Ioann Vasyliebych Zhyvyk, and his sons Vasylij Ioannov Zhyvyk and Aleksey Ioanov Zhyvyk as “Austrian worker, living in Kishkareny“, “ son of Austrian worker, temporary lived in Kizshkarany“, and “son of Austrian worker”.

We are hoping someone can advise us if there is any significance to be found in this description or if it may have just been a practice of the Parish Priest who made all of the entries in question .

Kishkareni, Sloboda Kishkaren’, Sloboda-Kishkareny, Slobozia-Chişcăreni

Above is the kind of detail that can be found in Orthodox and Greek Catholic Church Registers.
Parent + mother and father (their occupations & residence) + Occupation + residence.

Ivan Zhyvyk, son of Wasyl ( Temporary Austrian Laborer - maybe from Northern Bukowyna, which abutted this region- > Galicia > Austro-Hungarian Empire).

Wasyl, son of Ivan
Oleksa, son of Ivan

Time Frame from late 18th century to 1918.

Significance : The Zhyvyk family was not native to Kishkareny/Chişcăreni.

Additional thought:
Could original surname have been Dzyvyk, common Hutsul surname in Kalush > Ivano-Frankivska region > today Ukraine, formerly Galicia > Austro-Hungarian Empire????

Hannia: A belated Thank You.
I'm a little chagrined that it took me 3 days to respond to your post which you sent in a matter of hours. Family matters ( No pun intended) kept me away from my PC.
The locations you gave answered the unasked question of where we should begin the next part of the hunt. My friend began mousing around Hutsul and found various items that refered to certain DNA markers from there. Are you aware of any reliable studies of this type and how he can explore this further ? Thanks again............Murph.

PS: The DZYVYK name from Kalush is especially enticing. His grandfather Wasyl emigrated in 1910, sailing from Antwerp. His name on the passenger list was spelled ZYWYK.
