Hello Nadia

Perhaps did your grandfather spell his name Szpak or Shpak? Correct me if I am wrong Hannia, but does not Szpak mean Starling in Ukrainian?

There was a Szpak, Mykolay from L. Chomina, Galicia, age 42, DOB 1871, Arrival 1913 who came thru Ellis Island.

I will let the experts discuss Podusilne, Peremyshlany. There were about 50 individuals who arrived at EI from Podusilna. No Spaks on that list however. Where was Mykola headed?

Khomyna and Podusilna are neighbouring villages. He could be born in one of them and be married to another. I have been to both of them - do not remember any "Starlings' there.

Welcome Nadia and Happy New Year.

There was no Transatlantic passenger traffic during WW1 !!!

Ask Ruth (zarjacks) to help you to locate Grandfather's records.

Do you have an appx dob for Grandfather? Tempo is correct, Szpak/Shpak translates to STARLING in Ukrainian. Where did Grandfather settle upon immigration? What religion did he practice? Depending on time of immigration, he would have been considered an Austrian citizen or Polish citizen.

Podusilna/ðÏÄÕÓ¦ÌØÎÁ in Ukranian was founded in 1687. Today its still exists w/population of 316.

From late 18th century to 1919 wies/village Podusilna was hamlet size > Przemyslany was both the POWIAT (adm district-county) and the GMINA (judicial-tax district). This was Lemberg/Lwow/Lviv region > Galicia/Halyczyna Province, administered by ethnic Poles for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The filial Greek Catholic Church was in Baczow and the filial RC Church was in Firlejow (Rohatyn). During the Interwar Period (1919-1938) when this area came under Reconstituted Poland's domain, the region became Tarnopol. Post WW2 this hamlet was reassigned to Lviv region and the area became a part of SSR Ukraine, under Soviet domain until 1991, when Ukraine became independent.

Grandfather was probably baptized here, Church of the Epiphany of Christ (built in 1738), in selo/village Bachiv.

I have only the info I submitted. In 1998 I was in Ukraine for 3 months and on the last day my cousin who is now deceased Said "maybe you can find out were grandpa is buried" and until then I never knew my maternal granfather had immigrated to the US. I presumed he left between 1917 or 1918 my aunt (his daughter) was born in 1916., Was there any passages to us in 1916?
