Nadya,

How did you come to conclusion to search nearby villages?

At turn of century Ellis Island was not the only entry port. Deedo could have come thru Philadelphia, Baltimore, Boston or even thru Halifax or Montreal in Canada.

He would have been coming from Rohatyn (district)???

"Most" emigrants from Rohatyn headed for the Syracuse/Rochester NY area. I would consider checking Canadian entry. Try Ancestry. ca. You want to examine the Canadian ports and the Canadian/US border entry records. Just submit surname and stay flexible w/given name.

I did not realize there were other ports of entry. I am such a novice at this, and appreciate all your help.

There were a few Mikolaj Szpaks that entered thru ports other than Ellis Island.

I would suggest that you consider signing up on ancestry.com. The Morse site, connect to both Ellis Island and Ancestry data bases. Frankly, we can not be of any further assistance unless we have additional info from you.

If cost of signing up to Ancestry.com is too high then you can try accessing it for free at your local library. They have it for free. Ask someone at the library to show you how to access it. Right now I have a free membership to Ancestry.ca (as I just purchased their Family Tree Maker) otherwise I have done most of on-line searching at the library. You can also sign up for monthly membership and only use if for one month and than cancel your membership.

Nadyu,

You have no information with which to conduct a reasonable search, especially since there were at least 2 dozen+ same name emigrants coming from what is Ukraine today.

We need an appx date of birth (DOB). We simply need more info and if you do not have it , go get it.

Do you still maintain contact w/cousin, who claims Grandfather immigrated to USA? Can anyone provide a dob for him? Even if you were given an appx, you could order LDS films w/church records for the appx time frame, then research them and ascertain accurate date and a list of siblings.

Get on the phone to Ukraine or write a letter ASAP. Our group here is not going anywhere. We will be here when you have a response.

For example, the 1930 Census shows a Nicholas (English version of Mykola) Spak, age 43, living w/his brother Paul/Pavlo and his wife Marya and children in Luzerne PA. Pavlo, Nicholas and another boarder were working as a coal miners. This unto itself means nothing, but if we had a dob and knew whether he had a brother called Paul/Pavlo, we could ascertain when he immigrated.

PS> Mykola aside, when did your family immigrate to States and where did they settle upon immigration?
