Iluk / Iliuk (╤люк) from Doroshivtsi, Zastavna, Chernivtsi
I am a new member to this forum. After conducting some research into my Ukrainian heritage, here is what I have discovered:
In 1897, my great-grandfather Petro Iluk (born 1869) and his wife, Paraska Hnatiuk (born 1877) sailed to Canada, along with their son Wasyl (born 1896). They settled in the Gorlitz, Saskatchewan area and started to homestead. Although the name is currently spelled “Iluk”, a more accurate Romanized spelling would likely be “Iliuk”. The spelling of the surname in Ukrainian is ╤люк. My research indicates that Petro, Paraska and Wasyl came from Doroshivtsi, Zastavnivskyi raion, Chernivetska oblast. Petro’s father may have been named George (Georgii), although this is unconfirmed. It appears that the Iluk's travelled with several other families from Doroshivtsi on the same voyage. These families include: Billek, Choruk, Germann, Krylyk, Mikota, Repen or Rypej, and Sakuszek. Apart from that important bit of information, not much else is known about the Iluk family prior to their arrival in Canada. Official documents that the family may have travelled with (such as passports, military, birth, or marriage certificates) have never been located. I am therefore very interested in knowing more about: 1. the provenance of this branch of the Iluk family, including information related to when they may have settled in Bukovina 2. the history of the selo and that particular area of Bukovina during the 19th century 3. information about the church and cemetery in the village 4. whether there may still be distant relatives with the ╤люк surname in Doroshivtsi 5. other information which may possibly be of use or of interest Any information, guidance or advice would be greatly appreciated. Doroshivtsi = Дорош╕вц╕ has some very interesting history. It was technically founded by a Moldovian Lord in the 16th century and first documented in 1617, and today has a population of 1,514, but archaeological digs in the village and in the immediate surrounding area indicate that there was human settlement here as far back as 5500BC. Doroshivtsi is located in a picturesque canyon of the Dniester River, framed by Mt. Chahor (Carpathian Mtns) w/its many streams and waterfalls. Back in the Neolithic Bronze Period the human settlement here was a important supplier of flint.
The people of the Trypillian Culture were predominantly an agrarian group, who invented the very first indoor stove. They were the first (ever/anywhere) bread bakers. The Trypillian Civilization has been scientifically dated 5500BC-2750BC. There is extensive evidence of these people, living in the Western Carpathian Mtns spanning to the Dnieper River , encompassing regions mostly in modern Ukraine, and some in Moldova and Romania. At their peak, the Trypillians built the largest Neolithic settlements on the continent that would be Europe, some of which had populations of up to 15,000 people. One of the most notable things about this civilization was that every 80 yrs or so, they would burn the settlements and rebuild, preserving layer upon layer of scientific data. Trypillian society was matriarchal, with women heading the household, doing agricultural work, and manufacturing pottery, textiles and clothing. Hunting, animal husbandry and tool-making were the male responsibilities. The primary deity of this ancient population was female. The Trypillian culture developed a rich symbolic system based on their religious beliefs of the Great Goddess as the powerful giver and regenerator of life and the wielder of death. One of the other things you might consider at a later date is participation in the National Geographic DNA study. You just might be able to establish a connection to one of the very few human clusters in Europe, living in what is today the Crimean Region, during the Little Ice Age, 25,000 yrs ago. https://genographic.nationalgeograph...n/journey.html Trypillian Ceramics and Pottery I also have some more recent history of this village, but will provide that as soon as I organize it. _________________________________________________________ Title Metrical books, 1841-1933 Authors Orthodox Church.
