Marchuk (íÁÒÞÕË) from Lukovitsia, Hlyboka, Chernivtsi

I am a new member to this forum. After conducting some research into my Ukrainian heritage, here is what I have discovered:

In 1899, my great-grandfather Metro Marchuk (born 1857) and his wife, Anna Yakuchuk (born 1862) sailed to Canada, along with their 5 children: Sofia (born 1887), Mikhail (born 1889), Wasyl (born 1889), Nikolai (my grandfather, born 1893) and Paraska (born 1898). They settled in the Gorlitz, Saskatchewan area and started to homestead. The spelling of the surname in Ukrainian is íÁÒÞÕË.

My research indicates that Metro, Anna and their 5 children came from Lukovitsia, Hlybotskyi raion, Chernivetska oblast. It appears that the Marchuk's travelled with the Zusyk (Zusik) family, also from Lukovitsia, on the same voyage.

Apart from that important bit of information, not much else is known about the Marchuk family prior to their arrival in Canada. Official documents that the family may have travelled with (such as passports, military, birth, or marriage certificates) have never been located. I am therefore very interested in knowing more about:

1. the provenance of this branch of the Marchuk family, including information related to when they may have settled in Bukovina
2. the history of the selo and that particular area of Bukovina during the 19th century
3. information about the church and cemetery in the village
4. whether there may still be distant relatives with the íÁÒÞÕË surname in Lukovitsia
5. other information which may possibly be of use or of interest

Any information, guidance or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Richard

Welcome Richard and Happy New Year !

I am not sure what you mean. I always thought that applies to antique things. You probably mean origin before church records were available??? If the families were peasants that might be a toughie, if not an impossibility.

Orthodox Church Registers for both ancestral villages should be available on LDS Films and should take you into 18th century. Have you researched those yet?

I did a quick look for Marchuk/Marczuk surname in Lukovytsia. There are 13 listed currently. I just do not have the time to run all this up for you right now. Maybe I'll have some time later.

TODAY raion = district and oblast = region/state.

Thank you, Hannia!

Yes, you're right - perhaps the word origin is better suited in this case.

I will order the LDS films for both of the villages that I'm researching. Although I do not speak or write Ukrainian, I'm comfortable enough to muddle my way through documents with the Cyrillic alphabet in printed form. However, documents in cursive Cyrillic script may present a challenge. I will order one film first and see how much progress I make. Should it prove to be a daunting task , would you or other forum members be able to recommend someone who could help me at a reasonable cost?

Also, can you or other forum members recommend a good source(s) for learning more about the history of Bukovina, especially the Chernivtsi oblast and the two raions that interest me - Hlyboka and Zastavna?

Many thanks, and my best wishes to you all.

Regards, Richard.

Richard,

You will find that the church records (at least for Greek Catholic) are in Latin and so easier to read for us that do not know Ukrainian. I found a "cheat sheet" of sorts of Latin terminology I could post for you here or send me a message and I can email you the word document I have.

Something to keep in mind is that first names were the latin equivalents and not the name one would have been called by their family. Ie - Joanne (male) was recorded in the church records but most likey he would have been called Iwan (Ivan) or Basillus (latin name) would be Vasyl or Wasyl. Something to know and remember if searching for family names. If you are looking for Ivan. .you won't find that name in the church records. I have book here (not right in front of me at this moment) that has a great list of names that shows their Ukrainian name, Latin name, Polish and Russian equivalents as well. It has been very useful. I first got this book from the library and even tells you how to read the church records. Again, if you are interested I can get the book title for you.

Selo/village Lukovitsia (ìÕËÏ×ÉÃÑ in Ukr) > Hlybotskij raion/district > Chernivetska (Chernivtsi) oblast > Ukraine, latest zip code 60416. Current Population 1,412. Since there is another same name selo Lukovitsia in Hertzayivskij raion of Chernivetska oblast, I will assume that your ancestral Lukovitsia has been documented as the one in the Hlybotskij raion.

Richard, you strike me as someone who is intelligent and organized in your approach. If you run into a language problem, we will be here to help you.

Before getting started, reviewing the Vital Records Tutorial at following link could be helpful.
