Grzymalow & Zbaraz

My father's family were from Eastern Galicia.

ROTHENBERG/ROTENBERG/ROTTENBERG ... My grandfather, Solomon Rothenberg, came to the US in 1904 from Grzymalow at the age of 18. His brother Josef also came over about that time at the age of 23. They both settled in Philadelphia. I'm having a heck of a time locating Rothenbergs from that region. All that I know about this side of the family is that there was a third brother named David who was turned away at Ellis Island and eventually immigrated to Argentina, and, according to my grandfather's death certificate, their father was named "Harry" (It's Hersch on his monument). Also, Solomon's Naturalization records states that he came over on the ship Etruria on July 17, 1904 ... But neither he nor his brother Josef are listed on that manifest. Or anyone with a similar last name. Is it possible that there are manifest pages missing?

SCHMAJUK / SZMAJUK ... My grandmother was Rachael Schmajuk (aka Ray Smith). She was born in Philadelphia in 1892. Her parents were Moses (1859-1942) & Chaje Schmajuk (1963-1946) (aka Morris & Kate Smith). Moses & Chaje came to the U.S. in 1890 from Zbaraz. Chaje's family name was Ehrenkranz. I was able to research this side of the tree back to @ 1815-1820. I am stuck on the Schmajuk side, though. According to Moses's headstone, his father's name was Meyer. There was a Meyer Schmajuk in Zbaraz, but he was about the same age as Moses. I can't figure out if this was a brother or cousin and I don't know what Moses' mother's name was. I found the Schamjuks on a Hamburg passenger list, but they aren't on any list coming into the U.S. Again, is it possible that there are manifest pages missing?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

John Rothenberg
