Pankiw in Galicia
I am trying to track my family Pankiw; my grandfather, Wasyl Pankiw was age 17 when he arrived on 7/29/1911 from Zavadka Galicia. At least that is what I found on Ellis Island site. My father (deceased) spoke about Drohobych so I am not sure where to start. Wasyl married Mary or Marie Chomyn and they settled in Chester PA and were involved with the start of the local Orthodox church. I seem to find multiple Wasyl Pankiw's so I was not sure if the Ellis Island site is my grandfather.
Looking for some guidance, Thanks David |

Zavadka is 27.5 miles SSW of Drohobych. Zavadka was founded in 1538. Today it still exists as a hamlet of 648 residents. Your paternal Grandfather's village/selo Zawadka was predominantly a Ruthenian/Ukrainian village w/its own Greek Catholic Church. The filial RC Church was in Turka. Turka was the POWIAT (adm district-county) and the Borynia was its GMINA (judicial-tax district). From late 18th century to 1919 this wies/village was in the Historic Galicia/Halyczyna Province, administered by ethnic Poles for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. During the Interwar Period (1919-1938) this region came under Reconstituted Poland's domain and was part of the Lwowskie (Lwow/Lviv) region. Anyone born during this period would have been considered a Polish citizen and anyone born in the previous period under the Austro-Hungarian would have been considered an Austrian citizen. In 1940 the district pf Skole (Skolivskij raion was created and Zavakda was incorporated into that district. Post WW2 this region became a part of SSR Ukraine under Soviet domain until 1992 when Ukraine became independent. Today selo Zavadka (Завадка in Ukrainian) > Skolivskij (Skole) raion/district > Lvivska (Lviv) oblast/region > Ukraine, latest zip 82620. Some very old GC records for Zawakda during the Austro-Hungarian time frame have been filmed by LDS. ______________________________________________________________________________ Metrical books, 1785-1881 Authors Greek Catholic Church. Sorry David. the Wasil Pankiw (in my previous post) who arrived 7/29/1911 was actually headed for Rochester NY. He was likely from Zavadka in the Rohatyn area. There were/are at least a half dozen Zavadka in what is Western Ukraine today.
Additionally, I checked the ship manifest for each of the Wasil (+ variants) listed in Ellis Island Records. Destinations were: Wasyll arriving 4/1/1907 heading for Winnepeg Canada, Wasyl from Czesniki was headed to Herkimer NY, Wasyl (5-2 fair and married listed as Polish) was traveling w/stepmother and heading for Neward NJ and the 7 mo old (listed as 2 yrs old) was traveling w/mother, Anna, and heading to father's place in ????PA.

Have you located documentation for Mary/Marya Chomyn? What about some documentation from St. Mary's that Grandfather helped to build.
Do you know when Grandfather was born? What do you actually know regarding Grandfather, beside the fact that he was from Drohobych, a large district in the Lviv region w/40-50+ villages and the large district center/city?

We need to obtain accurate birth date for Wasyl.
As per SS Death Index Wasyl Pankiw was born August 22, 1883. Died 5/1967. Lived in Chester [Delaware county]PA) _________________________________________________ As per Hamburg Records,I did find one Wasil Pankiw (25/26 yrs old) arriving 2/19/1910 in NY. He was emigrating from Hrushow Galicia. (There was/is a selo/village Hrushow/Hrushiv - means PLACE OF PEARS > Drohobych ). Name: Wasyl Pankiw Departure Date: 19 Feb 1910 Estimated birth year: abt 1885 Age Year: 25 Gender: männlich (Male) Marital Status: verheiratet (Married) Family: Household members Residence: Hruszow, Ethnicity/Nationality: Galizien (Galician) Occupation: Landmann, Tagelöhner Ship Name: President Lincoln Shipping line: Hamburg-Amerika Linie (Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft) Ship Type: Dampfschiff Accommodation: Zwischendeck Ship Flag: Deutschland Port of Departure: Hamburg Port of Arrival: Cuxhaven; Boulogne-sur-Mer; Southampton; New York Volume: 373-7 I, VIII A 1 Band 219 Page: 335 Microfilm Roll Number: K_1812 We will need other documentation to confirm this find, but it looks like a reasonable match to me. Passenger manifests are generally approximate, 1 yr + or minus.

Hannia,
This would be accurate, my grandfather settled in Chester PA and from my memory visiting the gravesites, 1884 or so would be correct. I'll check next time I visit. Would I be able to track further back from Hrushiv? As far as my grandmother, I have been unable to see anything on Marie Chomyn in Ellis Island records, would it be linked with Wasyl? I will follow up later with my maternal side..... Thanks for your help! This is very exciting for my family. David |
