Pavlokoma Diaspora

Hi Ruth

I would appreciate your help identifying Canadian immigrant data sources. First let me explain what I am doing:

About a year or so I began a project to identify individuals who emigrated or left the village of Pawlokoma and created what I call the Pavlokoma Diapora Series. So far 12
Diaspora volumes representing over 1300 pages of spread sheets and text have been generated. What I do is search online data bases for surnames of families that are associated with Pavlokoma. My surname list includes ca 80 such names. The databases include such items as census records, immigration manifests, naturalization records, draft registrations, etc, etc. There are about 30 such sources that I am investigating so far. Why all the fuss? Well, Pavlokoma no longer exists as a Ukrainian village and I felt that it was important to remember my relatives and all the individuals who once lived there. A copy of each volume is sent to Professor PJP who will eventually archive these texts in his University of Toronto collection.

I am currently focused on searching Canadian records.

Canadian records I have researched so far:

1 Canadian Border Crossings – Ancestry.com –Complete

2 Canadian Census Records –Complete

3 Alberta Homestead Records -1870-1930 –Draft

4 Canadian Naturalization Records –Draft

5 Canadian Immigration Records – 1925-1935 –Draft

What I am trying to identify are the data sources for immigration to Canadian before 1925. You seem to come up with these records in many of the threads you respond to. The latest example is your 6 Jan 2011 response to Pereyma/Olynk. I am also interested in any other Canadian data sources that would fit my search criteria.

Thank you
Happy New year

Tempo,
I mainly use ancestry.com and ancestry.ca to locate immigration records. These might be from many different port records. Hamburg's are the most complete and usually have the village of origin. Baltimore or Atlantic ports were used. Sometimes just Googling the name produces results. Homestead Records from the various provinces are useful. Check Sask genealogy and Manitoba genealogy sites. You can post a request in newsletter for EEGS. Census records are rarely specific usually just saying place of birth as Austria or Poland.

There are ways of searching on Steve Morse's One-Step by village also. Hannia is more experienced here. Also Ellis Island is useful as many came to NY and then on to Canada. I think you can search here by village as well.

Not sure is this is what you want. Let me know if it's not.

Thank you Ruth

Your input put me on the right track. I had been looking for Canadian immigrants at Home - Library and Archives Canada and forgot to look at ancestry.com . I think I missed the forest for the trees.

When I create a spread sheet of Pavlokoma surnames it does not matter at that point if the village is mentioned or not. These are research documents and the list of names on one spread sheet are compared with the names on another. For example the names on a census list are compared with the names on a ships manifest list or draft registration. Each time I get a match I high light the name in red.

Hope this is not confusing.

I am familiar with the Morse site and use it quite often. I actually met him in Pittsburgh a few years ago at a FEEFHS conf.

My next area of will be to identify and search the South American, Australian and Ukrainian data bases for Pavlokoma diaspora. More on that later.

I did come across a post on a different forum that was of interest:

During the late 1940s, Pavlokoma was one of the Ukrainian villages destroyed by the Poles in the Akcja Wisla, during which Ukrainians were exterminated and their villages burned. In Pavlokoma the villagers took refuge in the church, which was set afire by the Poles. Some Ukrainians survived, among them a few villagers who were exiled and resettled in selo/village ZUBIV>Terembowlya District>Ternopilska Oblast>Ukraine.

Is there any more info available regarding those who resettled in Zubiv? I can supply surnames.

Thank you

Deportations, Volume 3 (published in Lviv in 2002) contains evidence of Pavlokoma people about events in 1944/5 - 9 pages.
