Surname paranka

Welcome Joni. Happy New Year !

As per Ellis Island there are about a dozen individuals emigrating from Galicia> Austria w/surname Paranka ( Паранка in Ukrainian).

Paranka is a nickname for female given name Paraskeva/Parashkeva. I have never come across it as a surname, but that means nothing.

Most Paranka (surname) are listed as emigrating from selo/village Horodyslawice (Городиславич╕ ). Today it is hamlet size w/population of 438 people. Due to its size, it belongs to the selo Mykolayiv village cluster w/which it shares a post ofc and the village administration > today in Pustomytivskij (Pustomyty) raion/district > Lvivska (Lviv) oblast/region > Ukraine zip 81140.

From late 18th century to 1918 wies/village Horodyslawice was predominantly a Ruthenian/Ukrainian village w/its own Greek Catholic Church. The filial Roman Catholic church was in Czyszki. Bobrka was both the powiat (adm district/county) and the gmina (judicial/tax district) > Lemberg/Lwow region > Galicia/Halyczyna Province, administered by ethnic Poles for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. During the Interwar Period (1919-1938) it was under Reconstituted Poland's domain. Technically Poland had not existed as a geopolitical entity for the previous 125 yrs+. Post WW2 this region became a part of SSR Ukraine, under Soviet domain until 1991, when Ukraine became independent.

LDS has filmed some old GC Church Records from Horodyslawichi:

Hannia,
You are a wealth of information - so kind of you to help out & post all of that. My grandfather was Harold Paranka & settled in Cleveland Ohio in the early 1900's. I will try to get more exact arrival dates from my father & update as I know more.

Again, thanks so much - this already helps a lot!
Joni

Joni,

Your Grandfather Harold (HARRY> formerly HAWRILO ) immigrated to America in 1913. Upon immigration thru Ellis Island, he joined his brother Petro/Peter in PA. As per 1930 Census Petro w/Sadie and Harry w/Katherine moved to Cleveland in appx 1926. (Eleanor, Petro's daughter was 4 yrs old during 1930 Census and she was born in Cleveland. Sam and Mary were born in PA.

The Paranka Brothers emigrated from selo/village Horodyslawice (Городиславич╕ ) > Galicia Province > Austro-Hungarian Empire, TODAY Western Ukraine. As per 1930 Census, Harry's wife (Grandmother), Katherine lists herself as Ukrainian from Czechoslovakia, TODAY very likely Zakarpatska region (Carpathian Mountains), Ukraine. Grandmother Kateryna's immigration records will show her emigrating from Hungary.

Your specific heritage is Halyczanyn (Galicia/Halyczana Province) and Rusyn (micro-ethnically either Lemko or Hutsul???) > Ukrainian.
__________________________

As per Ellis Island Records Harold/Harry, ORIGINALLY HAWRILO PARANKA.

Ellis Island shows Grandfather as Hanzilo Paranka (error in transcription). Original Ship Manifest clearly states his given name as Hawrilo. He is listed as Ruthenian (Ukrainian) from Galicia. He was was 17 yrs old (appx dob 1896)*** He arrived in Ny July 7, 1913 on the SS Washington. He left his mother, Artafina??? (maybe Anastasia???) behind in Horodyslawice. He was heading for Vogelville???PA, to join brother, Petro (Peter). Hawrilo was 5-2, blond w/blue eyes.

***SS shows Grandfather born 3/15/1898, in reality making him 15yrs old upon immigration.

1930 Census

Harry 31 (immigrated 1913)***
Katherin 27 (immigrated 1922)***
Harry 5
Anna 4
Stephen 2 1/2
Elsie 3 mos

Harry is listed as emigrating from Poland. Keep in mind that during the Interwar Period Grandfather's birthplace came under Reconstituted Poland's domain until 1938. Grandmother's birthplace came under Czechoslovakia during Interwar Period.

Records older than 1890 are available on LDS films. You will need to have an archival inquiry done in Lviv, in order to obtain Grandfather's metryka (baptismal certificate). Once you have full name of his parents and a list of all his siblings, you will be able to work back using LDS FIlms.*** Then you should be able to trace family back to 18th century. After the Holidays, ask Irene/Lviv to help w/Lviv Archives research. Her rates are very fair to our membership.

***Petro born 7/12/1891.

Again Merry Christmas and Happy New Year !!!!

Wow Hannia!!! That is so much more information than even my father knows about his ancestors - you are amazing! I can't thank you enough for providing me with so much information to get started on our search; we honestly thought that it was basically a dead end. Best wishes to you for a fantastic year!
