Hrabovetz

Hi come
I'm currently working on my family tree and have hit a road block, My father's family comes from Hrabovetz (?), a town that is sometimes in Poland and sometimes in Ukraine depending on the year. All Iknow is that it was there before WW II and now I can not find a reference to it. The family name is Romaniuk. How can I get information from this area?
Thanks, Myc

Romaniuk from which one of the selo/villages w/name Hrabovetz?

Grabowiec > Bohorodczany county > today in Ivano-Frankivska region of Ukraine
Grabowiec > Tarnapol > today in Ternipol region of Ukraine
Grabowies > Jaroslaw > today in SE Poland
Grabowiec Skolski > Skole > today Lviv region of Ukraine
Grabowiec Stryjski > Stryj > today Lviv region of Ukraine

Was it your Father that emigrated? What was the time frame? Where did he settle upon immigration?

Happy New Year!
I believe it is the village in Poland. His father was a police officer there before WWII. His father disappeared in 1935. He stayed near the Polish-Ukranian border for the duration of the war and immigrated in 1950 and arrived in New York around 1952. He spoke often of the village being near a disputed area that was sometimes claimed by Poland and at other times it was part of Ukraine. Thank you for your help.

I think 3 options are possible Bohorodchany district, Ternopil district, or Stryi district. We must find out in which of them live Romaniuk families..

All villages referenced in this post were in disputed areas.

Piłsudski died in 1935. (Irene, I think there is also a Hrabovets in what was Vohlyn (2nd Polish Republic), today Rivnenska oblast.)

What is Father's full name? How did he get from Poland to New York??? Did he emigrate via Germany?

What religion did he practice? Did he belong to any of the Ukrainian orgs in NYC?

Did he become a US citizen?

Hi
His full name was Wolodmyr Romaniuk. He immigrated in 1952, but he began his migration in 1949. He left from Germany where he waited for a year and then got on a ship for south america. He jumped ship in Jamaica and headed for New York. I found a document on footnotes.com showing him arriving in 1952. I would like to take my children to see my father's birthplace. We have distant relatives in Ternopil, but, they do not think it is the same town. I appreciate all of your help. Thank you.

Myc, that makes no sense at all. How did he get out in 1949? Technically there was no emigration from SSR Ukraine or Communist Poland in early post WW2 yrs. He must have already been in Germany before the end of WW2??? He might have been a POW or an Ostarbeiter/forced laborer???

In order to emigrate Wolodymir had to have had DP (Displaced People) status. Contact the Bad Arolsen Archives. These archives will provide you w/details of his exact experience in Germany and other personal details like EXACT PLACE OF BIRTH. Inquiry by immediate family is available for free. All you need to provide is his full name and any other spelling variants and his exact birth date, or as exact as you have it. Do not provide more info than that !!! Your inquiry can be done by e-mail. I understand the archives have upgraded their svce and response can be received via e-mail as well. Response can take as little as three days or as much as three months. That part has not changed.

Upon accessing site click HUMANITARIAN REQUESTS. Follow instructions.

Could be the late hour, but I am not clear what you mean here. Are your relatives disqualifying the Hrabovets in the Ternopil Region?
