Tiszasalamon (Solomonove)
Hello,
Does anyone know of any researchers willing to go to Tiszasalamon (Solomonove) and research the records of the Reformed Church there? I am writing a letter to that church to see if they can help me but I just wanted to check other options. My great-grandfather's name was Demes Ferencz and he was born 23 March 1890 (or 1889) and his parents were Demes Ferencz and Berta Rosalia. I have had some success researching other lines of my family at the LDS website with the viewable records there and it would be great if I could have some luck here, too! Thanks, Mike Demes |

Mike,
I vaguely recall communicating with you 5/6 yrs ago. You have Hungarian roots??? Did you ever write to the village mayor? There are 4 Berta and 1 Demesh w/phones listed in the selo/village Solomonovo White Pages. The records you are looking for are in the Uzhorod Archives. I do know a researcher in Uzhorod, but I do not know when he will be available. Around this time he rarely does any research until after the Ukrainian holidays, post January 14th.

Hannia,
Thanks for your response! Yes, I have Hungarian roots. My ancestors were of Hungarian descent and my great-grandfather left Tiszasalamon before World War I and the town changed countries. I would love to write to the mayor and to the researcher in Uzhorod. Please let me know how to contact them. Thank you, Mike |

Don't do anything until I give you go ahead.
Following is address to village mayor. Copy address exactly as is, using Cyrillic Alphabet and dual names of country, including country in underlined English to facilitate processing @ your local post ofc. Малинич Галина ╤ван╕вка С╕льський голова вул. Миру, 2 с. Соломоново Ужгородський район Закарпатська область 89460 Укра╖на - UKRAINE _________________________ _________________________ FYI transliteration of name and translation of address: Helena Malynych, daughter of Ivan Village Administrator Street of Peace #2 selo/village Solomonovo Uzhorodskij raion/district Zakarpatska oblast/region 89460 Ukraine I have e-mailed my contact in Uzhorod. As soon as I hear back, will put you in touch. BTW the local church has gone from Catholic hands to Reform to Catholic. Your ancestral village was founded in 1281. Today the population is 1,387 w/a fair size population of Hungarian descendants. There is an Audi factory in this village, which would indicate less dependence on tourism and agriculture.

You have missed out one detail Hannia - we had local elections in October with Yanuk's party coming to power in many towns and villages. This village also has a new Mayor: Malynych Halyna Ivanivna
http://www.vistiuz.com/ua/images/sto...95/97-98ua.pdf - see page 5 See the list - nearly no Hungarian names BTW - to do you know that Berehove was renamed in Hungairan style recently - I can neither pronounce or spell its new old name! Last edited by IreneLviv; 1st December 2010 at 17:08. |

Hello Irene,
Thank you for the help. I made the appropriate changes in my post. Was I suppose to be looking for the lack of Hungarian surnames in the list of mayors? As per Solomonovo history, the village is named after a Magyar and was at one time a predominantly Magyar village. The telephone directory does show quite a few OSH/I and ESH endings on surnames. I have no doubts that there are plenty of Hungarian descendants still residing there. ______________________________________________________ They changed the name of the town back to Beregszasz? Maybe not so odd. The Director of Archives of Berehove Archives was an ex KGB guy. Don't know if he still is there. I do know that Berehove Archives is now under Uzhorod Archives jurisdiction. ______________________________________________________ Recently the most optimistic thing I have read was re the Odessa small businessmen's protests. They were threatening Yanukovich and demanding that Azarov be fired.

Thanks for the information, Hannia and Irene. I will use that address when I send my letter, but will wait for the go ahead from you, Hannia.
You mentioned that there is no reformed church in Solomonove anymore? Should I address the letter I am sending to the Catholic church instead? Could you let me know the Cyrillic form as you did with the mayor's address? Thanks, Mike |
