Hi Dianmk
Do you have any more information about his village or its location?
Have never heard of Wirbir.
Its beginning sounds Polish, and the ending Ukrainian.
The nearest name I can think of is Wirow in Poland
Or, using Ukrainian spelling Sambir in Ukraine

Welcome Dianmk.

Kucyj = ëÕÓÉÊ in Ukrainian.

Today there are 247 people w/that surname living in Ukraine.

Was Father in Galicia Division, arriving in UK via Italy as a POW, or did he come via Germany as DP - Ostarbeiter/forced laborer? Had he ever mentioned any of the regions listed below?

What documentation do you have?

Irene,

Could be either or ? Additionally ëÕÃÉÊ might be a third possibility ?

Di,

Father, very likely, made a donation to following org. They kept a card file of donors. Info included was exact place of birth place, including district and region. Consider contacting them and asking them to do a search for you in exchange for a modest donation in Father's name.

Pan Kurlak is the CEO of the org. He should be able to provide contact, who is responsible for that card file. Best way to pull strings is tell him that you are looking to reconnect to your Ukrainian roots.

Thank you all for your speedy and helpful replies. My father was a pow brought to England in 1946. The name of his village was Werbir but I do not know which region. His family were farmers. The documentation I have are the original papers that came with him, written in either German or Ukrainian(not sure which) and his travel permits. my fathers fiirst name was Hyhorij but was called George here.
