Help finding villages
I am hoping that I can get some help on finding the villages of my great grandparents. I have found the ship manifest for both of them at Ellis Island. My great grandfather was Luch Zobrosky. Apparently the interpreter spoke Polish as they wrote his name as Lukasz Ziobrowski. He was born in 1891 and his village is listed as Ohrymowce or Ohrymowsa. The hand writing is very difficult to read. Papa arrived in the US in 1910 and his father is listed as Jacob Zobrosky. While I know it was very common for Ukrainians to say they were from Kiev, I am told by family members that Papa (Luch) said his village was near Kiev or at least in that area or region.
My great grandmother was Anna Repeta. She was listed as being from Galicia, which I know was western Ukraine / southeast Poland. Her village is listed as Novosilka. I know there are about 9 villages known as Novasilka, so it’s the preverbal needle in a haystack. If it helps, she arrived in the US in 1911 and was born in 1891. I cannot read the name of her father that was listed. I am aware of the databases compiled by the LDS, but if understand it correctly, I need the village and Oblast first. I do know they were both Catholic. I know this is a long shot so any amount of help is greatly appreciated. |

I think I found the other village! Just outside Ternopol. On the attached 1889 map the spelling is Ochrymowce. One the attached 1928 map the spelling is Ohrymowce. If you search the web with the 1889 spelling, you will find a lot of information. Good luck in your research.

Hello Irene, the village you have relocated is it the same one as Nowosiolki on old maps, located just north of Gologori (Gologory?). If so I may slot in here the old maps of that village.

Thanks Irene, I think I found it on the 1889 map but the map from the 1920s does not seem to be available. So if I am corect, it was Nowosiolka, with quite a few webpages available about this locality.

Paul & Irene,
Wow! I can not say thank you enough!!! Ultimately, my goal is to find family still in Ukraine and eventually visit them. There might not be any on the Zobrosky side. I believe all of Papa's family eventually came to the US. He and one of his brothers traveled together, although they got separated in Germany and were never reunited. Papa paid for five other family members to come over. One of his brothers never returned from fighting in WWI. The thought is that he must have been killed. From what I've learned from family, no one thinks he stayed in Europe. On the Repeta side, I had a good feeling that relatives are still there and from what Irene stated, it looks like that is the case. My great Aunt, Pauline, (Luch and Anna's daughter) just died about a month ago. She was 95 and the spitting image of her mother. We all called her Chucha, which I'm told is a mispronunciation of the Ukrainian word for Aunt. My cousin, Anna has gotten all the photos and family info. I'm trying to get with her to make copies of the pictures and other family contacts in the US who might have additional info on family back in Ukraine. Once again, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!
