Searching for Bachalo family

My great grandparents Maxim Bachalo and Maria (nee Bereziak/Buczak) immigrated to Glenella Manitoba sometime in late 1800's from Galicia, Austria. They were Ukrainian. They came from either Lvov or Kiev, not sure.

Their kids were Nick (my grandfather), John, Mike, Bill, Steve, Katie, Nellie

I found a death record for Max Baczalo in Glenella on 11/29/1924 and assume this is my great grandfather. I have ordered it.

I found a land grant for Maxym Baczalo in Manitoba and assume this is also my great granfather. I have ordered this as well. From what I have heard this is probably Alonsa. It was Township 50, Section 12, Range 15, Meridian W3, Part NE.

I am looking for any information on Max and his family, especially documents from Galicia that show the original spelling of the Bachalo name.

Also trying to nail down the exact year of their immigration and the ship they were on.

I cannot find any references to Bachalo in the 1901, 1906 or 1911 census.

We are unsure of the origin of the Bachalo name. It definitely does not sound Ukrainian. Sounds more Italian or Austrian. There are many Bachalo's in North America but not sure the name exists in Ukraine/Poland. Either the name was originally phonetically translated incorrectly (ie. Baczalo, Baczylo, Byczalo, Byzalo...) or the name is actually Austrian ie. derivative of Bach.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Ruth,

I don't think this is them. My great grandmother's name was Maria and my grandfather Nick was not the oldest so he would not be the only child on the passenger list. I found the Bazylo's in the census too and ruled them out since only the 3 were listed.

I found appx 150+ Бачало = Bachalo (CH pronounced like CHURCH. Today this surname shows up primarily in the Lvivska oblast/region, mostly in villages of the Javoriv/Yavoriv and the Stryj districts.

Chris, Ukrainian surnames are only exotic in English.

I am sure that your Бачало (could have been spelled Baszalo in Polish) family were originally from the Sieniawka/Basznia Dolna vicinity in SE Poland. These villages were/are appx 4-5 miles to Ukrainian border > abutting Yavoriv district > Lvivska region. From late 18th century to 1919 this region (what is SE Poland and Ukraine today) was called Historic Province of Galicia > Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Toward the end of WW2 ethnic Ruthenians/Ukrainians were relocated to SSR Ukraine. Others who refused relocation at that time were forceably relocated in 1947 by the Poles to the once German occupied territories in the far North and far West Poland.

There is a Detroit border crossing record (5/18/1928) for Mike Bachalo. He was born in Glenella. Lists mother, Mary Bachalo and an relative named Andrew Zdan. Andrij Zdan was from Sieniawka in what is SE Poland today. I found his documentation in Ellis Island Records.

It is good to know that our name was most probably interpreted correctly.

Interesting to note that Bachalo's and Zdan's have been close families for many years and I have traced the Zdan's back to Basnia-Dolna as well, so perhaps you are correct about Baszalo. I have searched on Baszalo in the Canadian records and found nothing. Baszalo is close to Baczalo that I have found in 2 Canadian records for Maxym but Baczalo was probably incorrect.

However, I was told the family came from Lviv/Lvov and my great grandfather Max was born in Kiev.

Yes, some of the family moved from Manitoba to the Windsor, ON and Detroit, MI areas in pursuit of employment in the booming auto industry including my grandfather Nick.

Any recommendations on how to dig deeper? Any way to find Max Bachalo's birth certificate in the Ukraine assuming he was born in Kiev? I think he died in 1924 at the age of 65 so would have been born around 1859.
