Hello Ange, I note one of your letters was sent by a Stepan Krenty/Krenta. He may well be the same individual mentioned in numerous web pages (including Google Poland), example: LITOPYS UPA - Series 1 Volume 30
There are connections with families who emigrated to Chicago as well as Canada. Perhaps by reading some of these pages you may begin to have serious leads in your own family enquiries. I started this quick check by asking from the web 'Krenty Bircza' and got lots of leads. There is a fair bit of interesting notes that I was not aware of. The little town of Bircza has a lot of history. And I may add it seems to be a particularly beautiful region! Last edited by PaulGorecki49; 23rd July 2010 at 00:26. Reason: spelling |

Sorry, I forgot to mention that in Google Poland if you search 'Solarz Bircza' you get a lot of hits - so your family is still there. What I would do if I was you is to write a message on the webpage of the Bircza township and hope for the best! You can find that page here: UrzÄ…d Gminy w*Birczy

From late 18th century to 1918 wies/village Leszczawa Gorna*** was predominantly a Ruthenian/Ukrainian village w/its own Greek Catholic Church. The filial Roman Catholic Church was in Lezczawa Dolna. The village was located in the Dobromil POWIAT (administrative district - county) and Bircza was and still is the GMINA (judicial-tax district) > Lwowskie/Lemberg wojiwodstwo/region > Historic Galicia/Halyczyna Province, administered by ethnic Poles for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. During the Interwar Period (1918-1939) this region came under Reconstituted Poland's domain. Technically Poland had not existed as a geopolitical entity for the previous 125 yrs. Post WW2 it continued under Polish domain and the powiat was changed to Przemysl and the region was called Podkarpackie wojiwodstwo/region > SE Poland. The distance between Przemysl in Poland and Lviv in Ukraine is appx 50+ miles.
***The GC church in Leszczawa Gorna (Higher) also served as the filial GC parish for Leszczawa Dolna (Lower) & Leszczawka. _______________________________________________________________________________________ Older GC Records have been filmed by LDS. Newer ones are probably in Przemysl Archives. I will take a look. **** Title Metrical books, 1786-1860 Authors Greek Catholic Church. That will make it easier to research. The newer time frame would cover your Grandmother and her siblings. I haven't seen her here for a little while. Might be that she is on one of her research trips. As soon as she gets back, we'll ask her. _____________________________________________________________________________ PS> The Solarz in Bircza who Sylvia has kindly uncovered for you, might very well be part of your clan, because in Poland just like in Ukraine, many villagers have migrated to the larger towns and villages for economic reasons. I hope the geopolitical history above has clarified that yes, the district center town, Bircza, is located in Przemysl county > Podkarpackie/Subkarpathian region of SE Poland. This area sits very close to the current border between Ukraine and Poland. ______________________________________________________________________________ Make sure to read thru this article for a better understanding of Grandmother's heritage.
