Seeking info on Robl surname

Hello,

My family is conducting geneaological research of our ancestor Franz Robl, born September 20, 1878 in Mukachevo (then Munkacs, Bereg county, Hungary). He married Catherine Robl in Mukachevo on July 4th,
1901. Both were Roman Catholics. Also, are we spelling Robl correctly? How do I find other synonyms?

I understand the first Hungarian census was taken in 1868, and before that birth, marriage and death records were kept by the village churches. Does anyone know where I could get started with church records? I'm not having much luck accessing the census data as I don't speak Hungarian. How are church
records kept? Have any of them been digitized? I'm guessing they're all ancient bound volumes. How far back does a typical church go? I know Hungary is probably the oldest country in Europe. It would be
wonderful to learn more about Franz and Catherine and their parents and most importantly which church they were part of.

I live in Anchorage, Alaska so any help you can give me is greatly appreciated. The voyage to Mukachevo is a very long one!

Thank you very much,

Robert Robl

Smile Franz Robel from ancestry.com

Hi Robert,
The name Robl can be spelled many ways e.g. I found the following: Robels, Ribble, Ruble, Rappel, Rubal, Rabel, Roebel, Rappl, Roeppel, Ripol, Rbaul, Revol, Robel and Wrobel - probably not all the possible variations. But your spelling is clear from the passport scanned on ancestry though officials can mangle it.

This seems to be the immigration record for the family of Franz, Katherine (Kati), Wenzel, Maria, Joseph and Barbara Robl (Robel):

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
about Franz Robel
Name: Franz Robel
Arrival Date: 5 Jul 1910
Birth Year: abt 1878
Age: 32
Gender: Male
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: German
Port of Departure: Bremen

Search Ship Database: Search the George Washington in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database

They left Szidorfalva, Bereg, Hungary (a sister Maria Robel) to go to a brother William Robel in Osh Kosh, Wisc.

Robert, you have had the best, our own Ruth, performing another one of her special feats of documentation tracking.

Immigrants frequently referred to their district centers as place of origin, for geographical reference, because their own villages were small. Munkacsi was the jaras/district name as well as the district center name.

Szidorfalva is called selo Hrabovo (Грабовo in Ukrainian) today!!!! The family was German. What religion did they practice?

Today Hrabovo is hamlet size with a total population of 146 souls. It belongs to the cluster village Puzhyakivtsi, w/which it shares it post ofc and village administration.

Hrabovo > Mukachevskij raion/district > Zakarpatska oblast/region > Ukraine, latest zip 89630.

Many Germans were evacuated by 1937 and there are records for these people. Others left behind, suffered horribly, some in concentration camps. A very interesting subject and one very rarely discussed is what happened to the 15 million Germans that were ethnically cleansed from their Eastern homelands. The brutality that they experienced in the hands of Eastern Europeans, like Poles and Slovak and Stalinists, is rarely publicized, but I think this is a subject that should be aired.

I should be able to get back to you later w/indication where records might be.

Ruth,

Records are catalogued, but not indexed and that is a big problem. We know they are there, but what villages are attached to the film numbers, is the rub. I am hoping some of the German orgs have already started to sort them out.

The EWZ (evacuation) records should not be too tough to locate. In order to qualify for evacuation, the Germans had to fill out personal questionnaires, listing several generations of family line proving that they were German.

Hannia,
Robert mentioned the family were RC originally and I assume he meant which specific church did they belong to, when he said " It would be wonderful to learn more about Franz and Catherine and their parents and most importantly which church they were part of".

I didn't know about the records for Zakarpatska not being indexed. I'm getting out of my area of expertise!

Franz Robl and Katalin Zirnsak Documents

Hello Everyone,

Thank you for all of your help! I've found some documents that may be able to help, Franz's passport and Katalin Zirnsak's (his wife's married name) baptismal certificate. Does this help at all? The collection of images is at

Thanks,

Robert Robl
