My maternal grandparents were as follows:
Michael Holinka (born 1885, emigrated as Mihaly Holyinka 1900) and his sisters Veronica and Anna are slovak Greek Catholics from Gereny. I have no parent names. Anna Teszlovics (born 1887, emigrated ?? but before 1908) gives origin on 1908 wedding documents as "Pod Karpatska Rus". In 1912 she returns to US with infant daughter Maria from Karcava. Her mother, Kata Teszlovics, is from there. I have no father name. Anna is also Slovak Greek Catholic. I have been unable to locate Greek Catholic (or any other vital) records from these areas via LDS microfilms. I have searched by Ung, Uzhgorod, and both village names. The films I have looked at are from other villages, or are "tally sheets" of births, etc. Has anyone found church records for these villages from, say, 1885-1912? Thanks!! |

Gereny = Horyany > Ungvar Megye/county > Kingdom of Hungary
Today your ancestral village/selo Horyany (Горяни), originally called Geren, has been incorporated into the city zone of Uzhorod and is considered to be a micro-district. That would be equivalent to a suburb in our terms. Population appx 1100+, of which at least 16 still carry the Holinka/Гол╕нка in Ukrainian surname. The village dates back to at least 1332. It was/is predominantly Rusyn/Ruthenian with many Hungarians living there as well. Recently there has been some archaeological finds at St. Anna's Greek Catholic Church in Horany. The newly uncovered murals in the church date back to 11th century. The church itself has had reconstruction in the last 1000 yrs. Maternal Grandfather was very likely baptized in this church. Scroll down to see inside of church. http://ukraine.kingdom.kiev.ua/region/06/goryany.php

Re Uzhorod Records:
To date some Uzhorod Archives Records have been filmed, but have not been organized. Your choices are to wait it out for a few yrs, make an inquiry at the Archives, where director is not particularly cooperative, or hire someone locally. _________________________________________________________________________________________ Today Karcsava is in Slovakia !!! You should be searching for records there. To anyone else searching for records from Karcsava/Krcava, Greek Catholic records from Vysne Nemecke are online via LDS now, and the GC church there incorporated Karcsava persons. I have found many Slovakia ancestral records. Just 30 miles away or so, Uzhorod remains a mystery.
