Borma and Dolenczuk in Worwolince (Vorgulintsy)
We would appreciate any information concerning the following families who came to the USA from Galicia in the late 1800’s. The surnames are Borma and Dolenczuk (Dolynczuk). Both families apparently lived in the Worwolince, Galicia, Russia area, which is now Vorgulintsy, Ukraine. We are doing genealogy research for a friend here in Texas, whose grandfather was Mateus (Mateuz) Borma. Marie Dolenczuk was a niece of Mateus Borma, and came to the USA to visit him. Thanks for any help or direction.

From the late 18th century to 1917, wies/village Worwolince was predominantly a Ruthenian/Ukrainian village w/its own Greek catholic church, Protection of the Virgin Mother Marya. The filial Roman Catholic Church was in Tluste (became Tovste later). Zalescszyki was the powiat (administrative district - county) and Tluste was the gmina (judicial/tax district). This was the Tarnapolskie region > Galicia Province > Austro-Hungarian Empire. During the Interwar Period (1917-1944) Zalescszyki county came under Romanian domain and was included in Northern Bukowina Province. Post WW2 it became a part of SSR Ukraine under Soviet domain until 1991, when Ukraine became independent.
(I just realized that you are from Texas and will have no problem understanding the above. This region had 3 different masters in a 100 yr period.) Worwolynce was founded in 1414 on the banks of the Tupa River. Archeaological digs of the Trypillian Civilization have been found at the village. Artifacts and structures have been scientifically dated and show that there was human settlement here in 5500BC. The Trypillians were an agrarian Neolithic Bronze Era Culture. They were a matriarchal society that are responsible for the invention of the very first indoor oven. They were the first to bake bread. There have been some additional artifacts found dating to the Kyivan Rus Period 9-12 century AD and to the Middle Ages as well, indicating continuous human settlement here for the last 7,500 yrs. To date selo/village Vorvulynce (Ворвyлинц╕ in Ukrainian) still exists and is clustered w/the hamlet Hynkivtsi w/a total population of 708 >Zalishchyskij raion/district > Ternopilska oblast/region > Ukraine, latest zip 48640. _____________________________________ I do not see that LDS has filmed the church records for this village, although RC records for the filial parish have been filmed. Irene might be able to help you w/the GC Records. Her rates are very fair and she does a very thorough job. Title Metrical books, 1744-1942 Authors Roman Catholic Church. 07/01/2006 – BEGAN SEARCHING FOR THE OVERSEAS HOME LOCATION OF MATEUS BORMA, GRANDFATHER OF MY FRIEND, FRANK BOMAR, AUSTIN, TEXAS. FAMILY LORE MENTIONED FAMILY CAME FROM GALICIA; AT VARIOUS TIMES PART OF POLAND, UKRAINE, RUSSIA, AND AUSTRIA. FRANK’S FATHER HAD CHANGED HIS SURNAME FROM BORMA TO BOMAR.
07/31/2006 - FOUND MATEUS BORMA AND FAMILY IN CENSUS RECORDS IN TEXAS FOR 1900, 1920, 1930. THEY SHOWED THE FAMILY TO BE FROM POLAND/RUSSIA, COMING TO THE USA IN 1896. MATEUS WAS BORN IN 1854, WIFE, THERESA, BORN 1854. CHILDREN WERE JOHN, BORN 1880; TECANO (F), BORN 1884; JAMES, BORN 1894. FIRST NAMES ARE PROBABLY ANGLICIZED, AND TECANO SEEMS TO BE AN ODD FEMALE ONE. MATEUS COULD PROBABLY BE WRITTEN AS MATEUSZ, MACIEJ, MATWEV, MATFEJ, OR MATEY. UNABLE TO LOCATE IMMIGRATION INFORMATION IN ANY DATABASE. TRIED MANY VARIATIONS OF THE NAME OF BORMA, SUCH AS BORN AND BORNE. 08/29/2006 - PLACED A REQUEST FOR HELP ON ALT.GENEALOGY NEWS GROUP SITE. BECAUSE OF THIS POSTING, WE RECEIVED AN EMAIL FROM FELLOW RESEARCHER IN THE USA, SHOWING GALVESTON, TEXAS IMMIGRATION INFORMATION FOR A MARIE DOLENCZUK, ARRIVING IN 1905, FROM POLAND/RUSSIA, GOING TO WEST, TEXAS TO MEET HER UNCLE, MATEUSZ BORMA. PROBABILITY WAS THAT MATEUSZ BORMA AND FAMILY CAME INTO GALVESTON ALSO. BUT, THE PROBABILIY WAS THAT THE LOSS OF MUCH OF THE IMMIGRATION DATA FOR GALVESTON INCLUDED THEIR IMMIGRATION INFORMATION. 09/07/2006 - PLACED A REQUEST FOR HELP ON VOLHYNIAN SITE, LOCATION OF WHICH WAS PARTLY IN PRESENT DAY POLAND, PRESENT DAY UKRAINE. COMMENTS FROM RESEARCHER IN CANADA, INDICATED THAT NO INFO WAS AVAILABLE ON BORMA IN THIS AREA. COMMENTS FROM RESEARCHER IN GERMANY WAS THAT BORMA WAS A PREVALENT NETHERLANDS NAME, BUT THAT BORMA MIGHT BE EQUIVALENT TO BORN, WHICH WAS PRESENT IN VOLHYNIA. FOUND SOME RECORDS ON CANADIAN CROSSINGS INTO THE USA, WHICH SHOWED DOLENCZUK AND BORMA SURNAMES, AND BEING POLISH/RUSSIAN/AUSTRIAN, NOT DUTCH. 05/23/2010 - PLACED A REQUEST FOR HELP DIRECTLY TO A PERSON ON THE POLAND BORDER SURNAME SITE, WHERE BORNE WAS LISTED AS ONE OF THEIR SURNAME SEARCHES. RECEIVED A RESPONSE FROM THESE RESEARCHERS IN AUSTRALIA. HUSBAND WAS OF POLISH DESCENT. THEY SAID THE NAME HAD BEEN CONFIRMED TO BE BORN, AND THEY COULD OFFER NO HELP. A DAY LATER THEY GAVE ME 4 POSSIBLE POLAND MAILING LIST SITES, WHERE I COULD WRITE FOR INFORMATION. THEY ALSO GAVE ME SOME INFO THAT I ALREADY HAD, THE TEXAS CENSUS RETURNS. AUSTRALIA COUPLE FOUND MORE INFO ON A MARIE DOLENCZUK, BORN 1878; WHOSE FATHER, FEOKA DOLENCZUK, WAS BORN IN WORWOLINCE, GALICIA, AUSTRIA. MARIE’S BIRTH YEAR MATCHED THE AGE OF THE MARIE DOLENCZUK THAT CAME INTO GALVESTON. AUSTRALIA COUPLE FOUND WASYL BORMA, BORN 1863 IN WORWOLINCE, GALICIA, RUSSIA, COMING INTO BALTIMORE IN 1905. MANIFEST SHOWS BROTHER TO BE MATEY BORMA, AND WITH A FRIEND FEOKO DOLINSKI. FINAL LOOK AT GALVESTON MANIFEST SHOWED WORWOLINCE AS BEING THE PLACE MARIE DOLENCZUK CAME FROM IN 1905. AUSTRALIAN COUPLE INDICATED THAT WORWOLINCE, GALICIA WAS NOW VORGULINTSY, UKRAINE. THE TOWN IS ONLY ABOUT 80 MILES SOUTH FROM THE BORDER OF THE OLD VOLHYNIA REGION. 05/31/2010 – RECEIVED A NOTE FROM RESEARCHER IN THE USA, INDICATING THAT THE PROVINCE OF GALICIA WAS TAKEN FROM POLAND BY AUSTRIA IN THE FIRST PARTITION OF 1772, AND CONTROLLED UNTIL ABOUT 1920. HE ALSO INFORMED ME THAT WORWOLINCE WAS IN THE ROMAN CATHOLIC PARISH OF TLUSTE, AND THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE IMMIGRATED INTO AMERICA FROM THIS AREA. THE BORMA FAMILY WAS CATHOLIC. 06/12/2010 – DID A SEARCH ON STEVE MORSE SITE FOR ELLIS ISLAND IMMIGRATION DATA FOR ANYONE COMING FROM WORWOLINCE. FOUND ABOUT 40 INDIVIDUALS THAT FIT THE CRITERIA. ONE WAS WASYL BORMA, ARRIVING IN 1911, AND ONE WAS OLEKSA DOLENCZUK, ARRIVING IN 1912. 06/06/2010 – RECEIVED A REQUEST FROM A RESEARCHER IN THE USA, WHO HAD SEEN MY POST ON THE ROOTS WEB SURNAME LIST FOR THE SURNAME BORMA. SHE INDICATED THAT HER FAMILY MEMBERS HAD SPOKEN OF A BORMA RELATIVE. THE OTHER SURNAMES SHE IS SEARCHING FOR CAME FROM SMALL VILLAGES SOUTH OF TERNOPIL, UKRAINE, ONLY ABOUT 50 MILES NORTH OF WORWOLINCE/VORGULINTSY. SHE AND HER HUSBAND WERE TRAVELING TO THAT AREA THE WEEK OF 06/13/2010 TO 06/20/2010. SHE WILL BE SEARCHING ALSO FOR THE TWO NAMES OF BORMA AND DOLENCZUK TO HELP ME IN MY SEARCH. LDS HAS TONS OF CATHOLIC CHURCH RECORD FILMS ON BIRTHS, DEATHS, AND MARRIAGES FOR THE VILLAGES IN THE TLUSTE AREA, SO MY PLAN WAS TO CHECK THOSE LDS RECORDS. 06/21/10 – JOINED THE UKRAINE GENEALOGY DISCUSSION FORUM AND PLACED MY FIRST POST FOR INFORMATION ON THIS FAMILY. WITH THE EXCEPTIONAL ANSWERS THAT I RECEIVED, I FELT THAT MUCH OF MY PREVIOUS SEARCH RESULTS WERE VALID, AND THAT I WAS ON THE RIGHT TRACK. WE WILL INFORM MY FRIEND OF OUR RESULTS, AND SEE WHAT COURSE WE SHOULD FOLLOW. THANKS TO IRENELVIV AND HANNIA FOR YOUR RESPONSES. SOME QUESTIONS FOR IRENE – WHERE WERE YOU ABLE TO ASCERTAIN THAT THERE ARE STILL 20 DOLYNCHUKS IN OUR AREA OF INTEREST? I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO FIND A TELEPHONE WHITE PAGES FOR THE UKRAINE. MOST FORMER SOVIET UNION COUNTRIES DO NOT HAVE THEM. ALSO, IF YOU WISH TO CONTACT ME DIRECTLY WITH INFORMATION ON YOUR SEARCH RATES, I WOULD BE HAPPY TO PASS THIS ON TO MY FRIEND.
