My mother had a photo of a woman taken in 1912. We do not know who this woman was, but there is some writing at the back of the photo (see attachment). I was wondering if someone in the forum could translate that text for me. Thank you very much.

Thank you very much Irene; this would have been to Marja Tarnogórska, the sister of my grandmother. Marja was born in about 1895.

According to the photo the surname is Tarn*gurskaya but not Tarn*gorskaya ("*" is a symbol i cannot understand, maybe it is "o" or maybe it is "e"). So which family are you looking for?

This name is probably of Polish origin - meaning 'someone from Blackthorn Hill'. The letter o acute is pronunced as [u] - therefore [у] is used in the Cyrillic font
