Tychy/Brytan family from Nastaschyn
I am doing research my grandparents Hryhory (Hryc) Tychy and Jawdocha (Dora) Brytan. What little I know is he was born 2/15/1872 and came to the US 4/17/1907. She was born about 3/20/1877 and came to the US 11/28/1910. They were both born in Nastaschyn and married there 11/8/1899. They had two children in Ukraine, Julia and Mary. My grandmother Stella was born here in the US. I have heard they had siblings who stayed in Ukraine. I am looking for information about the town of Nastaschyn and if any of the family still resides there. If anyone believes they have a family connection, would love to hear from you.

Nastashyne is a village in Ivano-Frankivsk region with a number of Brytan families. If you provide more information - probably old letters, photos, certificates, etc - I might try to establish you family connection.
What about their children? they came to the US with them? |

You are probably aware that Rochester is one of the oldest Ukrainian communities in America. The first Ukrainian immigrant, Evstachiv Makohin, arrived from the Rohatyn county in 1901. Within a few years Rochester had some 20 Ukrainian immigrants from the Rohatyn area, mostly Ukrainian Greek Catholics, who founded St. Josaphat's.
___________________________________________________________________ I found Jawdocha (Evdokhia) Tycha (female version of surname, which means QUIET in Ukrainian) arriving at Ellis Island 11/28/1910, She was joining her husband, Hryc (nick for Hryhorij) in Rochester. She was 33 yrs old and traveling w/one child, a 3 1/2 yr old named Josia (more likely Zosia). They were coming from Nastashyn, where Jawdocha left her mother. I cannot make out first name ??? Might be her maiden name, SZ....IAKY??? The surname is definitely Brytan. Your ancestral village Nastaszyn was in Rohatyn County > Stanislawow (later called Ivano-Frankivsk) region > Historical Galicia/Halyczyna Proviince > Austro-Hungarian Empire. Today selo/village Nastashyne is in the Halych raion/district > Ivano-Frankivska oblast/region > Ukraine, latest zip 77110. Population today appx 900. pix, where your Immigrant Ancestors were baptized. Image

Thanks Irene. I don't know an awful lot as my parents, grands and great-grands have all passed away. I do know Hryhory and Dora had 4 children in Ukraine; twins Kathryn and Stephen died very young, daughter Mary was born 4/9/1904 and Julia was born 7/25/1906. My grandmother Stella and others were born here in the US. I heard stories that Dora had a brother Frank who supposedly came to the US and Hryhory had a sister Mary who married a man named something like Popwych.

Hannia thanks for the info. I haven't had a chance to look at the LDS films yet, only the Ellis Island Records. I di find a book about Ukrainians in Rochester and it mentioned a Gregory Tychy as a long time member of the Ukrainian Central Relief Committee in the 1920's, and a charter member of St. Josephat's. I was told Hryhory was Ukrainian for Gregory. I am curious about the name Evdokhia, is that another form of Jawdocha? I would also like to know if anyonyone knows how these ancestors made it to Rotterdam and Hamburg in the winter to get to the ships? Again many thanks for all the help.
