Update and new questions...

Long time since last post... had a GREAT success getting 5 birth records from the Ghytomir archive which provided more then we could hope and enabled us to connect 3 huge trees that we maintain on GENi ! I was amazed that each document was in 2 versions - Russian and Hebrew ! and - that father name is specified for both the father and mother in each record - which is really vital information for correlation. We found our exact relation to the famous cantor Pinchas Minkovsky !

Now... we think there are more branches, and some expected documents were not found. I'd like an opinion on the following:

Pinchas is son of Mordechay son of Gad. Israel (my gggf) is another son of Gad. In Pinchas autobiography it's said that Gad was 'head of Shuvs' in Ghytomir (a Kosher-related position). By the birth records we got, all Israel's children were born in Zhytomir city (around 1880). However, Israel marriage/birth records were not found. Moreover by a record we found that Israel is from "t.Chabno Radomysl uyezd (district)" which is now Polisske (of Chernobel) or Rozhev ?

Does it make sense that Israel's father is from Ghytomir, he is from the above place, and then again his children were born in Ghytomir ? And - where could records for that place be found ?

Thanks !
Ofer

Poliske (today a district center in Kyiv region) is correct. Originally this town belonged to Ovrutsky uezd and then Radomysl > Kievskaya gubernia.

It was called Khabne/Habne ( èÁÂÎϤ ) prior to 1923. History has it, that it was settled in 1415 by Jews fleeing Mongol attacks on Kyiv. The place name may mean ESTATE or MANSION in Hebrew??? At the time your ancestor lived there, the population consisted mostly of Jews (80%), Cossacks, and Poles. Most residents were involved in the textile weaving industry. Today Poliske consists of 10 people. It took a while before the town was evacuated after the Chernobyl Nuclear Accident and evacuation did not begin until 1993.

Re Poliske:
E-mail your inquiry to attention of the Director: Ivan Kisil @ the Kyiv Historical Archives.

I would appreciate any direction or help to find my mother's family. My grandmother was Eva Levitt on the ship manifest she entered the US in 1911, Her name was written down as Chawe (Chava or Chave). She put her father's name as Jossel Wultmann or Vultman. who had stayed back in Zhytomir. It was also written that the area was Wollynia did the person writting down in the information not understand her? Couild have been Volynia? She brought my mother Ruchel Levitt, and a sister and brother Raisel, Moishe. Her age was 26 or 28 as it's difficult to read. Her Husband came in 1908-his name was Soloman but it is down as Salomon. When my great aunt came in 1912, she used the name of Wolf and had kept that her entire life. Any suggestions how I can get more information on Mother's family.---the ones that stayed there.
