Post Searching for records for great grandparents MARGULIS

Hello everyone!

I'm excited about this forum because I've been reading all of the posts here, and I have seen a lot of amazing connections and people getting help from truly talented genealogists. Hannia and IreneLviv seem to be remarkable... and I don't mean to sell the rest short! There are a lot of other amazing people here too. It's nice to know there are forums on the Internet that are still unaffected by naughty and controlling people.

I'm in search of a branch of my family that comes from the Zhytomyr, Ukraine region. In the early 1900s, it was Zhitomir, Russia. After it's freedom, it was briefly Ukraine's new capital, until Poland swept in (I believe) and took it. Apparently there have been an exceptional number of famous people in the world that were from Zhitomir/Zhytomyr over the last century. I had never heard of it until recently!

My grandmother's maiden surname is MARGOLIS. Her father, Samuel MARGOLIS came from Zhitomir to the USA as MARGULIS as a child (I found their passenger manifest finally on Ellis Island). I have been unable to trace them further back, and I'd like to find birth, death, and marriage records, if possible (knowing that this is a difficult task indeed).

Moische (abt 1868) & Leie (abt 1870) MARGULIS came to New York, USA in 1913.
They brought their children:

Schloime (Solomon) (abt 1892)
Schmilke (Samuel) (abt 1898)
Dwoire (Dora) (abt 1902)
Chaje (abt 1904)
Sure (Sara) (abt 1906)
Feige (abt 1908)
Freide (Freida) (abt 1910)

I'm very unfamiliar with the process for searching for these records in the Ukraine. Any suggestions on how to proceed forward? Would anyone search for me? I would like to pay if necessary! Are there any steps I can do on my own?

Thanks in advance!

Kevin

Welcome Kevin Elliot.

Your family was Jewish and they were from Zhytomir, the city ???

If this is correct, there is a fair amt of data that you should be able to obtain thru inquiry at the State Archives of Zhytomir oblast.

Unfortunately LDS has not done very much filming of Jewish records there, and that prevents you from doing your own research.

It is cheaper to hire someone, than have the archives do the work, because the research is complex and they will drag out the man hours.

Following is a quick list of available documentation:
Census Records for 1795, 1811, 1816, 1834, 1850, 1858
Marriage Records for 1841-1920
School Records 1847-1919
Tax Lists 1906-1915, 1917-1919
Kahal Records post 1905

From late 18th century to 1921 Zhytomir was in the Vohlynskaya gubernia/region > Czarist Russia.
Records are in Hebrew and Russian.

During the Interwar Period (1921-1938) this region, was called Wolynskie wojiwodstwo and was a part of Reconstituted Poland, which had not existed as a geopolitical entity for the previous 125 yrs. Records in Hebrew and Polish.

PS> I checked the ship's manifest and the family was indeed emigrating from Zhytomir> Wolin. I need to do a few other things and I will be back to you tomorrow.

Haven't forgotten. I am waiting to hear from somebody that I think should be able to help you research records, but have not heard back anything yet. This is a very busy time of yr for these researchers. There are many travelers especially this time of yr , searching for roots.

I will send him another e-mail. If I don't hear from in the next week or so, I will find you someone else.

Today it's humid. I don't mind. For me the seasonal changes are an advantage. I don't have to wear the same clothes yr round.
