I found that there are still appx 120+ Chernohorets residing in Ukraine today.
Do you know the exact place of origin of your Cossack Families? According to some of our membership, most of the Don Cossacks came from Poltava, but I have found the surname (originally Bulgarian???) scattered in many parts of Eastern Ukraine today.

Honcho is a good nickname for a Cossack descendant.
Beside the historical history, is there any family history that you can provide? Are the families still in Kuban today? Have you done any archival research? Since the early 1990's there has been a resurgence of the Cossack movement, totaling appx 3-5 million, in the Krasnodar krai. There are membership organizations that revolve around the Cossack identity. Have you made any contact with them? There is an important museum of Ukrainian Cossack history on the island of Khortitsia in Zaporizhe. Photos from Khortytsia Запорозька Січ на Хортиці

Following information may become important at later date???
Post WW2 , Kuban Cossacks in Germany, that had managed to escape Soviet repatriation, immigrated to America and Canada. In Canada, they mainly setted in Ottawa and attended the Bukovynian Orthodox Church. In the USA, their communities were centralized in Jackson & Howell, New Jersey. To date there are still some very important Kuban Cossack documents and artifacts still held in New Jersey. Some regalia has been returned to Krasnodar. The address of the museum in Howell NJ Kuban Cossacks Museum 49 East 3rd Street Howell NJ 07731 Phone:1- 732 -367-0088 ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ In 2008 there was a Cossack Ataman of the Americas elected. Fascinating. Cossacks USA - Cossack Rada & Election of Ataman

The name implies that ancestor came from Montenegro (or somewhere from the Balkans). If you do DNA testing on male descendant, there's a big change they might be I2a2 subclade of I2 haplogroup.
Since you know that three families with that name appear in 1st Kuban cossacks 1794 census - you probably know what KUREN (Cossack division/region) they are from. Learning a bit of history of specific kuren, you'll pretty much know where to start looking in Ukraine. |
