Bodnar Family (Woloszczyna)
Hi, I am looking for any information about my family who live in Woloszczyna which is in the Ternopilska Oblast and Berezhanskij Rajon. As far as I know Tekla & Anton had 5 children (Stach, Maria, Anna, Michael & ?). I think Tekla died in 1968 but I'd like to find out more about the whole family. Can anyone help? Thank you. Sylvia

Welcome Bodnar.
_______________________________ From late 18th century to 1919 wies Woloszczyzna was hamlet size. The filial Greek Catholic Church was in Bozykow and the filial Roman Catholic church was in Podhajce. Podhajce was both the POWIAT (admnistrative district-county) and the GMINA (judicial-tax district) > Tarnololskie wojiowodst/region > Historical Galicia (Halyczyna) Province, administered by ethnic Poles for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. During the Interwar Period (1919-1938) the region came under Reconstituted Poland's domain. Technically Poland had not existed as a geopolitica entity for the previous 125 yrs.Post WW2 this region again changed hands and became a part of the SSR Ukraine, under Soviet domain until 1991, when Ukraine became independent. Your ancestral village was named after the Wallachians, who setted these lands after the Tartar attacks in the 16th century. Woloschyna (ВОЛОЩИНА), was founded in 1785. Today it continues to exist as a hamlet w/a population of 410 souls. Due to size it is clustered with selo Bozhykiv. It is in the Berezhanskij raion/district > Ternopilska oblast/region > Ukraine, latest zip code 47535. The village prides itslelf, because of its long fight for freedom. There is a cross in the village, dating back to 1848, that commerates the abolition of serfdom. There is also a memorail to the many, who from Woloschyna and it's immediate neigbor villages, were executed in the Berezhany Prison in 1941 by the Soviet NKVD. Your village was/is very small, but comes with a huge heart. ____________________________________________________________ Irene is correct. There are no Bodnars listed in Voloschyna today , however there is a Paraskovia Bodnar, daughter of Mykola, dob 6/1/1932 that shows up in village selo Bozhykiv. Since many villagers have migrated to the larger towns and village I checked Berzhany and found several there. The last 7 Bodnar live in villages not far away in Berezhany district, but also not very close to Bozhykiv and Voloschyna. And of course, because Bodnar is not an uncommon name, there are a bunch in Ternopil, the regional capital as well. ***** Боднар Андр╕й ╤ванович Шибалин, ***** Боднар М ╤ П╕двисоке, ***** Боднар Г М Жовн╕вка, ***** Боднар О М Жовн╕вка, ***** Боднар ╤ван Андр╕йович Посух╕в, ***** Боднар Г ╤ Посух╕в, ***** Боднар В╕ктор Петрович ___________________________________ What is it that you want to accomplish? Do you have any idea what Immigrant/Bodnar's maternal surname was? This may be be another approach to your search. Writing a simple letter of inquiry to the Village Administration is also another alternative. Both the Village Administration and the Post Ofc are located in Bozhykiv. I traveled to Woloszczyna in Sept. 2009 to trace my family roots which began there with the arrival of my great-great-great grandfather, Ivan (who was born in 1775). A plaque honoring my great, great grandfather, Andriy, still stands behind the iconostas in a village church, as does the gravesite of my great, great grandparents. I have photos of a few women in the town (in their 70's-90's) who still remember a great-uncle who lived there before WWII, who was the last of my genealogy to live there. If you're interested in my photos of these people, please email me directly at zkids@aol.com, subject Woloszczyna.

Hello Sylvia
I am engaged in my own quest, looking for relatives in the Ukraine. Then I came upon your post which mentions the name "BODNAR". Today I just found an envelope addressed to my mother, Patricia Woloschuk (nee Radon, originally from Sosnica Poland), from ANNA BODNAR in Berezhany, near Ternopil. I recall hearing the name Bodnar when I was young, but have no idea of our connection. The postmark does not show a clear date, but it was mailed during the Soviet era. My mother settled and married in Sudbury, Ontario. It may also be that there was a Bodnar there. I believe a Ukrainian Catholic priest at St. Mary's parish in Sudbury is a Bodnar. I will call him to see if he can shed some light on the Bodnars from Berezhany or Voloschyna. Richard |
