1st, I am dumbfounded that Greek Catholic is denoted plain as day on all of the baptismal records but the relative that I got them from told me that they were from a roman catholic church- I saw the stamp from the church in the upper corner and went with it. This may allow me to move ahead a bit on this side of the family (although I planned on trying to find the greek catholic records anyway since the family always said they were ukrainian and I just found some relatives that were deported in 47- it only made sense that they would've been greek catholic at some point right?
When my great grandfather came over they were greek catholic but went to a german roman catholic church. It was what was closest in the community.

Greek catholicism, Uniate, eastern rite are all orthodox. Under the Poland Lithuanian Commonwealth(dominantly roman catholic) to maintain their churches they accepted the Vatican.

I agree on the village of Jakimiczyce.... that was based on conjecture on name form alone and even if I did trace it to there, I highly doubt that anyone had that name when they actually lived in the town. It would be a useless designation if everyone had it. It seems like the type of name that you would get after moving! Look it is Semko from Jakimstown.

Truly, she would have been a peasant girl, more than likely. She neither read nor wrote. She spoke of living in a house on a hill- or maybe more likely IN the side of a hill. She said that they would have to get the cow off the roof- the cow would be eating grass off of the top of the hill. At the base of the hill was a river. There are vague family memories of her saying they would take vegetables to the boats to sell in the town. Her family that stayed were said to have been "butchered by the russians", I am assuming sometime around WWI. Her sisters had actually survived and visited in the US, by surprise, in the 1960's. They spoke of surviving a concentration camp and something about holding the fence open to let a little jewish girl escape.

I am telling you these things because maybe they will have some significance to one area over another that may spark an idea in your mind that will lead to me seeking out records from churches in a specific village. As of now, it seems like Drohojiv may be the place to start based on your hunch (which over the years has shown to be backed up by a wealth of knowledge and a sharp mind- thank you much Hannia!)

On to the archives and Stare Siolo. What is the procedure for getting info from these archives? Can you point me to a how-to or anything.

My great grandfather Mykolaj's sister Rosalia married Jozef Gancarz while still in the old village. My great aunt says that she has visited not only stare siolo but also visited some of the Gancarz family that were not pure polish and were deported over the border and now live in IvanoFrank- I will ask her for a village name on the off chance that the families knew each other and possibly landed back in a neighboring or older ancestral village. There is no running water in this village (collect rain water). I believe it is a one phone and one radio village too.

Joe,

They probably have maintained contact.

The village name in Ivano-Frankivsk would be a good thing for me to know as well, because there is no organized list of resettlement for Ukrainians from Poland and any little bit of information becomes very important.

Go visit your Great Aunt and make sure to get her on tape.
Get her talking about anything and everything. You will not regret it.
