This is the same transliteration that existed since 1996 as provisional, and I don't like it at all.
eg How would you write MARIA according to it - M A R I IA = MARIIA??
By the way Police (Passport sevice) uses its own transliteration..

Part of our family discussion and preparation for a book about our Ukrainian family history, has been about the 'correct' transliteration of some names. We are trying to establish a consistent English spelling for these names.

I know, and appreciate about it said that "the ONLY CORRECT SPELLING of the name is in its original language, using its original alphabet, in this case Cyrillic"

Each one of us that is participating, all has a different spelling for some of the family names. and so I am asking for some help with choosing the most correct spelliing in English, in particular for my g-g-grandfather Aksenti / Axenty / Axenty.

Thanks very much.

I just joined this site and noticed your note.

My grandfather was Aksentij Hucul. He was seen in a shipping list as Akienti and also Aksenty.

I understand that Aksentij was the Galician spelling, and Alexander or Alex is the anglicized version. Cheers, Shelley Hucul

Alexander in Ukrainian is transliterated as Olexandr (more common nick is Oleksa),

It is very likely that your Aksentij was Christian Orthodox. Didn't matter whether he was from Eastern or Western Ukraine. This given name was documented dating back to 15th century.
