HI, I'm looking for both of my grndfathers families. My Dad's father was born approx. 1882, he came to Canada in 1913. On the ship list his name is Matwei Kowtun, on his homestead his name is Mike Kollun, on the census it's spelled Mike Koltum , some other papers of his it's Mike Koltun and on his death certificate it's Matthew Koltun. He brought his wife Daria Stefanow Malowechka, and 3 children Anastasia(Nellie), Harwiil(Harry), Gregory(George) in 1924. He moved to Lac La Biche, Alberta in 1933, 34, 35,?., he passed away there in 1964. On his families paper work there was a relative listed I think the speling is F. Deneshnowa ,Sonolowca, Kiev Gub. Russia. My father said there were aunts, uncles, and cousins left behind. Now my Mom's father , he was born approx. 1896, he came to Canada approx. 1913. He stayed with his uncle Stefan and aunt Anna Nowosielski in Gimli, Manitoba, they came to Canada in 1902 from Lubienki?. He married Elisabeth Hemmerling in 1916 and homestead in Arborg, Manitoba the same year?. They had 5 children Mary, Joseph, Christian, Martin and Rosaline(died in infancy). On his marriage certificate his name is Gregory Nowosielski, on his land title it's Harry Nowoselski,on the census it's Harry Noselski, on his death certificate it's Harry Novoselsky ( he passed away in 1932). He had a sister her last name was Melnakewski she had 3 children 2 girls and a boy, she came to Canada in 1939?. I couldn't find him on any ship lists, the only Gregor Nowosielski I found was his cousin born in 1900. I would greatly appreciate any info. anyone could give me or any relatives out there. I'm really curious about their lives and where they came from and to see if we have anybody left out there with the same blood run through our veins. Thank You in advance for any help or info. you can give me. D. Koltun

Let's deal w/one at a time.
______________________________________________________________________ Grandfather Matwey (equivalent to Mathew in English) Kowtun (homestead name Mike) dob 1882, arriving in Canada 1913. wife Daria Malowechka, daughter of Stefan. 3 children: Anastasia (Nellie) Hawrilo (Harry) Gregory?? > George Aunt left behind in Sonolowca (could be Sokolowka or Szkolowka/Szkorowka???) > Kievskaya gubernia > Czarist Russia. There must be dozens and dozen of Sokolowka's throughout Ukraine. _______________________________________________________________________ There are appx 35,000+ people w/same surname, Kovtun + all transliteration variants, currently residing in Ukraine. It is a very common name. Malowechka/Malowechkij (masculine form) = Маловецький is distinctly a Cossack surname. There was a regiment around the Bilotserkivska district of Kyiv region, whose leader was Kuzma Malowechkij. ??? These locations mean nothing, but they give me an idea where to possibly start looking, because Sokolowka is such a common place name. It seems that Shkarivka (Szkorowka??) is in the Bilotserkivskij district of Kyiv region. It was settled in the 16th century on the Ros River. Today popuation is 2,290 and I see a Kovtun, Antonina, daughter of Nikolaj dob 1967 listed. No Malowechky, or I least I can't find them. I will also check the aunt's surname, but not now. Will be back later. PS> Your search is rather difficult, because you have common names emigrating from common name place names. Last edited by Hannia; 4th February 2010 at 18:27. |

Cattleman,
If you could post the passport here, that would be terrific. If you can't, please send as attachment to MITEHELP@AOL.COM Hopefully there is something there that would give us some clues. |

After all this time, Grandmother Darya is presenting you w/the gift of heritage. She is probably the one who saved the documents.
The family was from selo/village Sokolowka > formerly in Uman district > Kyivskaya gubernia. Today the large villlage still exists in the Kryzhopilskij raion/district of the Vynnitska oblast/region > Ukraine, ZIP CODE 24633-635. I am pretty sure I have this right Sokolivka, but I will double check later, because there is another one in Cherkassy. I am so excited for you. ____________________________________________________________________ SOKOL means FALCON in Ukrainian. ________________________________________________________________________________ D. Kowtun, are you male or female? I need to make dinner, but I will be back later. Last edited by Hannia; 6th February 2010 at 22:49. |
