Suffix ‘ciuk’ ( in Ukrainian - ЧУК ) indicates belonging to a certain family or something else ( Pylyp – Pylypchuk - means someone from Pyplyp’s family )
- specific skills in craft , etc ( Koval – Kovalchuk , Коваль – Ковальчук - someone who is from a family of Smith or who has skills of a smith) It doesn’t have any relations to Polish – ski . Ukrainian equivalent of it is – s’kyj ( male ) , s’ka ( female ). Perhaps the most important thing is that this suffix is of Ukrainian origin. The person with such one for sure has Ukrainian roots. It is possible that it came from the ancient times. We are very old nation Hello from Ukraine ! |

Ohhh, so do you think that I might come from the line of King Samo, if my last name is Samociuk? How would I write that in Ukrainian? CAMOЧУК?
I know that in Polish "sam" means like alone, only, or something like that, and it's similar in Ukrainian. I don't think that there was some guy who started my family and he was really lonely so they named him only, haha. Thanks for the reply, though! |

Dennis,
The 3rd name in your example is the patronymic name of Mychajlo and means 'son of W/Vasyl'. See: Patronymic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Ruth |

Dennis,
Your surname is based on type of food. Галушка means DUMPLING. ___________________________________________________________ polakdave, Was the surname Самочук or Самосюк??? I could not find any transliteration variant Samochuk/Samoczuk*** (would be Самочук in Ukr), however I did find 177 Samociuk/Samosiuk (Самосюк) living in Ukraine today. ***CH/CZ pronounced like in CH in Church. |
