research for the name MacAhonic

Hi
I hoping someone could tell me if they have ever heard the surname MacAhonic. My grandfather came from the Ukraine, but from exactly where I'm not sure. All I know is when they came over to Canada they changed the spelling because no one here could spell it proper. So this is what they came up with. I know this is a long shot but I figured why not ask. My brother has tried for several years to find any info but has come up pretty much empty handed.
Thankyou InAdvance

Welcome Lobia.

What is Immigrant Grandfather's full name, appx when did he immigrate and where in Canada did he settle upon immigration? What religion did he practice? Was he single or married when he immigrated? Is there any family history?

does the pronuciation of Macohon sound like MacAhonic? Just wondering about the ending sounding like "ick" I know that when they changed the spelling to what it sounded like in the english language.

Hannia I was looking up sounds etc. for the Ukraine language and happened across someone you talked with back in october of 29/2001.Her name here is mom-of-3. She was searching for info on her surname ( KITCHUR ) . What was interesting was what she said " I found out yesterday that my dads moms maiden name was Makohnik " that's the closest I've ever seen. I wonder if that could be the proper spelling of ( Mac - A - hon - ic )

Макагон/Макогон (in Ukr) = Makahon or Makohon ???

The closer transliteration (sounds like) would be Makahon or Makohon. In Ukrainian the meaning is stick w/ball bottom, used for either churning butter or crushing seeds or making mash for pig slop. The suffix on the surname is a little troublesome. I have checked and such an ending for this root is highly unusual and that is probably why Irene suggested the surname as just Makohon, w/o the letters IK.

In Genealogy you have to stay very flexible w/the spelling of names, because when one is transliterating (sounds like) from one alphabet (Ukrainian Cyrillic) to another (English - Roman Alphabet) the variations are in the ear of the person doing the transliteration.

Technically the only correct spelling of your surname is in its original language, using its specific alphabet. Everything else is a transliteration variant.

Following should be helpful in making clear what happens when you transliterate from one alphabet into another.
